Leidos heritage companies pioneered the development of modern air traffic control systems in the United States more than 50 years ago. Today our systems handle 75 per cent of the air traffic in the U.S. and approximately 60 per cent of the world’s air traffic. When it comes to air traffic safety and efficiency, Leidos’s proven track record and industry-leading innovations make it the world’s most trusted air traffic control partner. In the U.K., Leidos has supported NATS since the early 1990s, starting with the development of the current en-route air traffic system, migration and ongoing development and support.

Leidos will deliver a significant refresh to the NATS technology and services that manage UK flights once they leave the lower airspace surrounding airports and before they transition to European or Oceanic air traffic control. The Leidos team provides the underlying infrastructure (network, compute, etc.) and integration services for the entire system.

The Role You Will Play:

The Chief Engineer will report to the NATS Account Director and be responsible for the service and technical performance of the various Leidos teams delivering four major areas: current air traffic systems support, future air traffic system delivery, air traffic software solutions and enterprise business IT. The principal focus will be the future system delivery, which encompasses the IT infrastructure (network, compute, storage etc.), system integration and definition of the service itself. This work is of strategic importance to both NATS and Leidos and successful delivery will see the transition to a new, flexible platform for more efficient UK air traffic management solutions.

This role could be filled by an experienced senior engineer who is comfortable working on technology and service solutions.

Primary responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with the Account Director and Programme Manager

  • Building trust between the various NATS and Leidos stakeholders, using clear communication to drive excellence across integrated project teams

  • Oversight of a portfolio of programmes to provide technical challenge, guidance and innovation

  • Lead, motivate and communicate effectively across the NATS account engineering team

  • Identify metrics to measure and improve performance across the NATS account

  • Track performance against plan, identify and execute plans to mitigate blockers

  • Act as a conduit to the wider Leidos global team to leverage corporate experience

Required Skills:

  • Ability to engage effectively within a broad programme team comprising both customer, supplier and Leidos staff

  • Able to demonstrate a sound understanding of technical, business, finance and personnel management techniques

  • Good interpersonal skills and judgement for dealing with both internal and external stakeholders to develop strong working relations to support achieving objectives

  • Ability to work autonomously, prioritising tasks and activities as business and customer needs change

  • The ability to communicate, negotiate and influence effectively at all levels

  • Ability to motivate and develop staff

Desirable Skills:

  • Air Traffic Management knowledge would be advantageous

  • Experience of SOA/ITIL/Service Management methodologies

Clearance Required:

  • Clearance to Start SC

  • Clearance for Role SC

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
