Job Description:

The Pointing Flight Controller position is responsible for the long-term communications predictions, unique line of sight analysis, and specialty attitude design and verification for the International Space Stations (ISS), associated payloads, and visiting vehicles.  This position is located at NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston Texas and is a part of the JSC Flight Operation Directorate (FOD).

An individual in this position will initially certify as a Pointing flight controller, performing line of sight calculations and predictions primarily for the ISS Program.

Future certifications may include Attitude Determination and Control Officer (ADCO) flight controller and serve as a technical expert for the ISS Motion Control Systems.

ADCO Flight Controllers are responsible for working in a partnership with Russian controllers to determine and manage the station's orientation, controlled by the on board motion control systems.

This position also plans and calculates future attitudes and maneuvers for the station and is responsible for docking the ISS with other vehicles.

These individuals are also responsible for training astronauts, and peers on spacecraft GNC systems.

Personnel will be expected to complete NASA led flight controller and instructor certifications for this area of expertise.

Duties will require successfully completing a training and skill certification process.

Individuals in this position may interface directly with the NASA customer, subcontractors, ISS program personnel, International Partners, and commercial vendors.

This flight controller certification will require support during day shifts in the Mission Control Center (MCC).  

Once certified, the individual may then achieve additional certifications after a period of time to support more complex operations which may require working evenings and weekend shifts.

Basic Qualifications

This is an entry-level position.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in related engineering discipline, or equivalent experience and less than 2 years prior relevant experience.

Bachelor's Degree or anticipate graduation within the next 6 months in Physics, Mathematics or Engineering (ABET).

Your GPA needs to be included on your application and resume.

Knowledge of engineering principles and the ability to apply them to real-time operations is essential.

Previous experience with or course work in basic engineering, orbital mechanics, and spacecraft flight dynamics is desired.

Excellent communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, leadership, teamwork, technical, and administrative skills are mandatory.

Candidate must have a demonstrated ability to plan, lead, and coordinate a wide range of tasks.

Candidate must demonstrate the ability to progress through flight controller and instructor certifications.

Candidate must be able to apply technical knowledge and operations concepts to exercise effective decision making and initiative in a real-time and fast-paced operational environment. 

Shift work (nights, weekends, and holidays) is required.

Candidate must be able to support infrequent travel domestically or internationally.

Russian, Japanese, or European language skills are a plus.

Candidate is required to pass a standard flight controller physical examination prior to completing their first flight controller certification.

This position requires successful completion of a government background check before commencement of employment.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $50,700.00 - $78,000.00 - $105,300.00
