The Leidos Civil Group is seeking a Research Scientist for its Research Support Services (RSS) contract for the Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in in Morgantown, WV. The incumbent in this position will support research in Hydrogen Combustion: Fundamentals and Injector Design. The objective of the work is to increase opportunities for hydrogen usage in gas turbine combustors by (1) improving the fundamental combustion knowledge base and addressing issues associated with hydrogen combustion in both premixed and non-premixed low NOx combustion systems using hydrogen and hydrogen/natural gas blends and (2) taking advantage of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques to design fuel injectors for both premixed and non-premixed gas turbine combustion systems.
Primary Responsibilities:
Responsibilities are functional in nature and performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Provide fundamental data and validate models for hydrogen and hydrogen-methane fuel blends in a small scale (<100 kW) laboratory burner at atmospheric pressure.
- Running lab experiments with premixed hydrogen-air on a small-scale burner (100kW) at atmospheric pressure
- Flame flashback and flame holding will be studied as a function of equivalence ratio and burner characteristics.
- Measurements will include using laser diagnostics and high-speed cameras to study flame behavior near flashback
- Data analysis and report writing will also need to be conducted.
- Active participation in group meetings.
- Work independently and collaboratively with members of the research team to meet milestones and deliverables.
- Lead efforts in preparation of technical papers, reports, conference papers, and annual and quarterly reports.
- Presenting the results of the research at technical conferences and publishing in archival journals.
Basic Qualifications:
- The candidate must have a PhD from an accredited university in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
- A minimum of 1 years work experience post-PhD.
- Clearance: Incumbent must be able to meet the requirements for gaining clearance to work on the NETL campus
- Knowledge in thermal sciences, heat transfer, combustion, lasers, optics and laboratory operations.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the writing of scholarly publications
- Demonstrated proficiency in collaborating technical findings with external research organizations such as research laboratories and/or academic institutions
- Ability to document and present research results, including using power point presentations and making podium presentations at technical meetings.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Publications demonstrating proficiency in experimental techniques for combustion research: OH-PLIF, chemiluminescence, LDV or PIV, and hot-wire anemometry.
- Publications demonstrating proficiency in combustion modeling: reduced-order and CFD modeling of turbulent combustion, burner fluid dynamics, and heat transfer. Experience with chemical-kinetic mechanisms.
- Preference for experience in a national laboratory environment or industrial R&D lab where safe working practices are paramount.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the writing of scholarly publications.
- Demonstrated proficiency in collaborating technical findings with external research organizations such as research laboratories and/or academic institutions.
- Ability to document and present research results, including using power point presentations and making podium presentations at technical meetings.
Program Specific Salary Range: $75K to $85K
Pay Range:
Pay Range $60,450.00 - $93,000.00 - $125,550.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
