The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is seeking a Computational Material Scientist to join our team in Albany, OR.  This opportunity will allow side by side execution of research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to contribute to new areas of basic and applied research. The employee will involve a multidisciplinary team, participation alongside other engineers, geologists, and data scientists to help develop next-generation tools aligned to the priorities of the DOE Fossil Energy and Carbon Management mission space.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accelerate the design and development of cost-effective high-performance ceramic materials (e.g. oxides, silicide’s, carbides, nitrides, borides, etc.) for extreme environments (such as high temperature, high stress, water vapor, hydrogen, oxidation, corrosion, erosion, etc.) using multiscale computational modeling and machine learning.
  • Perform tasks to predict thermodynamic (e.g. enthalpy & entropy), kinetic (e.g. substitutional diffusion (including cation), interstitial diffusion), thermo-physical (coefficient of thermal expansion, thermal conductivity), defect energetics (surfaces, interfaces and grain boundaries), mechanical (e.g. elasticity, plasticity, ductility, fracture toughness, yield stress), and environmental properties (e.g. oxidation, corrosion, or hydrogen embrittlement). The computational outcome will be used to guide experimental effort in optimizing the composition-processing-microstructure-properties relationships.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary team, including geologists and other science researchers to assist each other in accomplishing project-related tasks
  • Building relationships with internal and external clients. This opportunity involves collaboration among national laboratories of Department of Energy, universities, and industries.
  • Creating and delivers oral and poster presentations of results
  • Publications in high quality scientific peer-reviewed journals, presentations at national and international technical meetings.
  • Period status reporting and project reports (weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually) is required to update project managers and clients.
  • This position will require extensive interface with clients and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in DFT calculations on diffusion, phonon, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties using VASP package.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer programming and code development using Python, C/C++, Fortran, Linux script, parallel computing, etc. 
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Postdoc experience of 1+ years in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in DFT+U calculations of oxides.
  • Experience in molecular dynamics using LAMMPS to simulate mechanical behavior of solids.
  • Experience in machine learning algorithm development.

Program Specific Salary Range: $85K to $100K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $74,750.00 - $115,000.00 - $155,250.00
