We are currently seeking Distribution Engineers to work with our Power Distribution team based out of Walled Lake, Michigan.

These positions will be hybrid in nature, with some time spent in our team office in the greater Detroit area, and some time spent working remotely. This role could potentially require leading other distribution engineers, oversight and QA/QC of both simple and complex engineering projects, working directly with clients, and ensuring the Leidos reputation of high quality is maintained.

Distribution Engineers will develop construction work packages for the electric distribution system using various software systems and construction standards. Distribution systems may be in an OH, UG, or URD environment. Project work may include new business and reliability designs. Work packages will be developed using Bentley Open utilities Design, Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Work Management Systems (WMS), and other client systems.


Project work will require performing engineering calculations that may include: structural analysis of poles, guying, cable pulling, electric demand, transformer sizing, voltage drop and flicker, and coordination of protective devices. Assignments may also include: preparing forestry trimming requests, facilitating permit and Right-of-Way acquisition, development of a BOM, estimating costs, and customer advocacy such as acquiring easements. Work assignments may include traveling by motor vehicle to various project locations located throughout the area to conduct field investigations. (Customer/Job-related travel will be reimbursed at IRS approved rates.)

To be considered, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below.

  • For Level 2: Bachelor’s Science Engineering degree (EE preferred) is required (or equivalent relevant experience may be consider in lieu of degree) and 2+ years of prior relevant experience

  • For Level 3: Bachelor’s Science Engineering degree (EE preferred) is required (or equivalent relevant experience may be consider in lieu of degree) and 4+ years of prior relevant experience

  • For Level 4: Bachelor’s Science Engineering degree (EE preferred) is required (or equivalent relevant experience may be consider in lieu of degree) and 8+ years of prior relevant experience

  • For Level 5: Bachelor’s Science Engineering degree (EE preferred) is required (or equivalent relevant experience may be consider in lieu of degree) and 12+ years of prior relevant experience

All levels require:

  • Relevant experience either working directly with an electric utility or an electric utility consulting company, performing design engineering

  • Execution of distribution projects from kickoff through design approved

  • Previous QA/QC experience

  • Proven history of Customer interaction and accurate process documentation

  • Experience with the NESC and/or CA GO95

  • Candidate must provide their own reliable transportation, as some local travel is anticipated. (Customer/job related travel will be reimbursed at IRS approved rates)

Nice to haves

  • EIT or PE license

  • Experience providing estimated costs, development of a BOM, calculating the CIAC

  • Experience with design tools such as Pole Foreman, O-Calc, SPIDAcalc

  • Experience  using MicroStation--performing Electrical Distribution design

  • Experience with Joint Use and Colocation projects 

  • Experience with rear to front lot conversion projects
