Job Description:

We are seeking a Geologist or Geographer to join our team in Albany, OR in support of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). The work offers an opportunity for up to 10% remote work. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems, to advancing technologies that enhance oil and natural gas extraction and transmission processes, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled women and men at NETL’s three research sites – Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

This is an opportunity to execute fundamental and applied research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to perform research aligned with the goals of the U.S. Department of Energy, including carbon management and resource identification.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify credible data sources through extensive literature reviews and online research, then acquire and process data for further analytics.
  • Utilize geologic domain knowledge to understand and evaluate open-source data collection needs for ongoing projects.
  • Support quality assurance and control of geospatial data products and associated metadata prior to public release.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team, including geologists, geographers, chemists, computer scientists, environmental scientists, and other researchers to assist each other in accomplishing project related tasks.
  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external clients. 
  • Generate data analysis reports that are publication worthy. 
  • Assist in writing methods, results, and data interpretations for publications in high quality, scientific peer-reviewed journals, and technical reports. 
  • Develop and present results for oral or poster presentation at staff meetings and professional conferences. 
  • Provide weekly and monthly technical updates to research team members and project management.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geography, Geophysics, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
  • Experience collaborating on a dynamic team
  • Competent in ESRI products (ArcGIS, ArcPro) 
  • Experience identifying, acquiring, and processing credible data (including tabular and spatial data) from online sources
  • Experience developing readmes or metadata for research
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years experiences or Master’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geography, Environmental Sciences, or related field.
  • Expert in ESRI products (ArcGIS, ArcPro, and ArcEnterprise)
  • Experience developing Web Applications and Dashboards through ArcEnterprise
  • 1+ year experience programming in Python for data sciences
  • Experienced in data analysis, report development, scientific writing, and presentation of results
  • Experience in communicating science to a range of audiences
  • Has worked with geologic data including LAS or raster well logs, or seismic data
  • Experience working with regulator datasets including production and service records, such as permitting, inspection, and maintenance records

Pay Range:

Pay Range $50,700.00 - $78,000.00 - $105,300.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.

Covid Guidance for the US
