Are you a technical professional looking for rewarding full-time work supporting a national security mission? If so, you might be one of the next Leidos systems engineers providing supporting the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) as a member of the Defense Programs (DP) Office of Systems Engineering and Integration team, working on a variety of projects.

Your work will be performed at the NNSA office in Washington, DC. You will also work at the other DOE locations occasionally, as needed.

Position Description:

As a Systems Engineer you will conduct engineering and analysis work in support of nuclear weapon modernization programs.  You will apply engineering principles and practices to solve complex engineering challenges and participate in program management reporting. You’ll use investigative processes and analyze information to manage requirements, make improvements, increase productivity, and mitigate risks. You will also exercise judgment and technical expertise to accomplish goals based upon program planning and mission performance.  This requires a person who can work independently, creatively, and under general supervision.  

You must possess an active DOE Q or DoD Top Secret clearance to be considered.

This is a full-time position. The position is located in the NNSA offices in Washington, D.C. Some telework may be allowed as approved by customer.

What you will be doing:

  • Assisting in development of an integrated schedule with cost and risk contingency analysis using your proficiency in understanding requirements flow, interface linkages, and technical risk mitigation strategies associated with program scope.
  • Applying systems engineering principles (such as project assessment and control, risk management, design definition, integration process) to adjust and maintain an integrated program baseline.
  • Providing technical and programmatic assessments; advising Federal Program Managers (FPMs) on execution of cost, scope, and schedule for the system acquisition; and to representing, within program guidance, the NNSA’s program interests and positions in interactions with other agencies and corporate entities.
  • Understanding broad objectives from management, then independently analyzing, evaluating, and integrating solutions for unusually complex and diverse technical problems.
  • Identifying, tracking, and developing strategies to mitigate technical risks related to product and/or system performance objectives.
  • Conducting technical reviews of component designs to meet requirements and component functionality within a system context and providing insight into the appropriateness of progressing to a final design.
  • Attending and representing the FPM in Project Officer Group and sub-group meetings with the Department of Defense (DoD) and their performing contractors.
  • Providing technical leadership on special topic assignments as needed.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related discipline and at least 4-8 years of related experience or Master’s degree and at least 2-6 years of experience is required.
  • Active DOD TS or DOE Q clearance required. Active DOE Q is preferred.
  • Knowledge of program and project management/scheduling tools and techniques is required. Project management and experience managing nuclear weapons system sustainment, modernization, or acquisition preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated experience in writing and editing briefings for senior and executive managers is required.
  • Ability to travel is required.
  • Nuclear weapons and delivery platforms experience is desired. 
  • Design and manufacturing experience in NNSA, military, government, or corporate environments desired.
  • NNSA/DOD Interagency experience is desired.
  • Experience managing interdisciplinary teams is desired.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $78,000.00 - $120,000.00 - $162,000.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
