Job Description:

Leidos has an opening for a Mission Lead in our Webster, Texas office. The Mission Lead will be responsible for a NASA contractor team executing Payload research missions aboard the International Space Station. The Mission Lead will be primarily assigned to Rodent Research (RR) missions but may be assigned to other Payloads as well (e.g., Keyence Microscopy studies and/or PCR studies). The Mission Lead will manage the overall mission, mission schedule, mission tasks and will serve as the main POC for the REMIS missions to the ISS Program, the PI team, and all other related stakeholders required to implement the mission. The Mission Lead will help principal investigators define, develop, and implement their research in space, and act as a liaison between the investigators (or their representatives) and Payload interfaces to represent their scientific concerns to various groups within NASA, and will help ensure that flight and ground hardware kits, crew procedures, planned ground and inflight activities, and crew training crew result in successful science return.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a liaison/advocate between mission principal investigators (PI) or their representatives and other stakeholders, responsible for maintaining PI awareness of schedules and implementation issues, which may require their attention and participation.
  • Provide project management leadership to manage all mission related tasks, ensure tasks are completed per schedule to meet mission milestones, and work is performed within allocated budget.
  • Work with mission teams to manage all aspects of mission readiness including flight and ground approvals (as needed), hardware readiness, crew training, operational readiness (procedures, timelines, manifests, etc.), ground operations logistics, safety, and Certification of Flight Readiness.
  • Assess impacts with stakeholders and coordinate issue resolution
  • Proactively identify schedule and technical risks, and develop/implement risk mitigation/contingency plans
  • Adhere to appropriate safety, quality, environmental practices, and business ethics practices.
  • Demonstrate the interpersonal skills required to maintain productive working relationships with co-workers, management, and the NASA customer(s).
  • May be exposed to live animals, animal dander, sharp medical supplies, steam and hot water, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other hazards associated with biological or physical science research.
  • Support for other contract task orders and missions, including materials research, biological research, and gene sequencing missions as required.
  • May be assigned to perform Payload Integration Manager (PIM) function for different payloads as needed. 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or Biomedical Engineering (other science or engineering degrees considered with relevant experience), and at least 4 years of relevant experience working in the space industry.
  • Familiarity with NASA project development and flight/ payload operations processes
  • Familiarity with real time console operations (as console operator or team lead for console operators)
  • Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point) skills/competence
  • Microsoft Project skills/competence
  • Willing to work non-standard work hours to provide mission critical support
  • Willing to travel (approximately 10% of time)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Experience with Systems Engineering principles
  • Prior experience in animal research, PCR hardware, and/or digital microscopy
  • Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and practices, and/or prior experience working in a laboratory environment
  • Experience with firm fix price contracts
  • Experience with working with geographically dispersed teams
  • Experience performing PIM function

Must be able to obtain a Public Trust security clearance; U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Resident status is required due to length of investigation for non-U.S. Persons.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,900.00 - $126,000.00 - $170,100.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
