The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for a Chemical Hygiene Specialist to join our team supporting biomedical research at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX. NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations
Primary Responsibilities
Assist Government Safety Officer with assuring the safety of employees pertaining to designing, modifying, and maintaining the chemical hygiene program for NAMRU-SA
Assist with organizing, planning, implementing, and auditing the environmental programs and policies for the operation, ensuring compliance as required
Assist management, operations, and project/maintenance teams to assure compliance with federal, state, local and internal rules and regulations pertaining to operational environmental aspects and impacts
Assist with waste and remediation activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, including the waste management plans, shipments, manifests, and regulatory reporting
Act as the Point of Contact (POC) for hazardous and medical waste operations on required reports, inspections, and other applicable regulatory requirements
Assist with hazardous waste and medical waste compliance audits; Assist in facilitating resolution of action items from findings of reviews, inspections, and incident investigations
Communicate regular updates on hazardous waste or medical waste policy changes and/or training requirements
Assist in implementing and maintaining an effective filing system for all operational data to ensure compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements
Review internal standard operating procedures (SOPs) and risk assessments to ensure safe handling and disposal of Hazardous/Non-Hazardous materials
Maintain Chemical Inventory and Authorized User List (AUL) for hazardous/non-hazardous chemicals and send an Annual Chemical Inventory to all appropriate parties
Perform weekly inspections of all eyewash stations
Review and approve all chemical orders and ensure proper PPE is on hand for usage
Coordinate new and annual refresher SAP Site training
Write and route all SAP appointment letters
Coordinate and track all SAP waste characterization and schedule waste drop offs
Conduct annual EMS audits
Update NFPA Door signage as required
Required Qualifications
Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required
B.S. in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field with 2-4 years of related work experience
The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level. Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level
Intermediate desktop skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
Ability to lift, push, and pull 25 pounds. Position requires candidate to frequently stand, walk, handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms
Ability to handle hazardous/non-hazardous chemicals and work within Biosafety Level 1&2 (BSL-1 and BSL-2) laboratory environments
Follow and adhere to all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) guidelines
Maintain occupational health requirements
The ability to work within a collaborative team environment, with demonstrated personal drive and initiative to achieve goals
Pay Range:
Pay Range $50,700.00 - $78,000.00 - $105,300.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
