We are seeking a Petroleum Engineer Data Scientist to join our research team in providing actionable, scientific, and data-driven results to inform carbon storage assessments and evaluate risks associated with oil and gas infrastructure, supporting the energy transition to a carbon neutral future. This work will involve participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists as part of a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations for efficient and resilient energy systems to environmental stewardship of energy resources, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support the transition to a carbon-neutral energy future, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled people at NETL’s three research sites – Albany, Oregon; Morgantown, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

Aspiring candidates should demonstrate:

  • Ability to appropriately apply and explain Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) models to investigate natural and engineered geologic energy systems problems.
  • Domain knowledge of petroleum systems, wellbore engineering, reservoir engineering, and subsurface evaluation for both onshore and offshore systems.
  • Collaborative mindset to work with an interdisciplinary team towards actionable, scientific, and data-driven results that inform carbon storage assessments and support safe energy strategies.
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and presenting scientific findings at conferences or workshops.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support multiple scientific teams as an AI/ML expert, which might include advising AI/ML model selection to answer a variety of energy research questions, assisting in modeling application, feature selection, and result explanation.
  • Use subsurface infrastructure domain knowledge expertise to evaluate and establish decision-support, data-driven, and spatio-temporal scientific methods, including workflows to identify existing wells and resources for carbon storage development and offshore saline co-storage development.
  • Develop spatio-temporal analytical, geostatistical, and machine learning tools to identify likely locations of undocumented wells based off data for known and/or documented wells using spatio-temporal trends in development & production.
  • Leverage deep learning and feature extraction techniques to process historic imagery data to identify and geolocate wells, with the intent of identifying older, undocumented wells.
  • Support the development of novel AI/ML methods and applications and maintain existing AI/ML models and tools.
  • Interrogate and explain analytical results, providing research products that inform subsurface activities and energy infrastructure development.
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to develop scientific and data-driven methods and tools.
  • Publish research in scientific journals and present results at workshops and conferences to a variety of audiences.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering or related field with 3+ years related experience
  • Expertise in supervised and unsupervised AI/ML models, including artificial neural networks, gradient boosting, image classification, and natural language processing
  • Experience applying AI/ML modeling specifically with image processing, feature identification, and/or wellbore data analytics
  • Experience with or knowledge of wellbore systems and subsurface data
  • Experience with subsurface energy applications and energy infrastructure system components with a demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply that knowledge in a decision-making framework
  • Experience with or knowledge of carbon storage processes and current research topics
  • Experience with or knowledge of wellbore materials and construction
  • Experience collaborating with a team to use AI/ML, data-driven analytics to inform decision-making strategies
  • Demonstrated experience publishing and presenting scientific findings in journal manuscripts, as well as at workshops or conferences
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus

  • Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering or related field
  • Data Science certification

Salary Range for this position: $90K to $110K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $74,750.00 - $115,000.00 - $155,250.00
