Are you interested in improving and shaping the transportation industry in a group of intelligent and motivated colleagues? Consider joining the Leidos team operating FHWA’s Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL), a USDOT research lab focused on the improvement of transportation operations, safety, mobility, and environmental impacts. STOL provides a variety of services to support the advancement and deployment of emerging technologies, including vehicle automation and communication. To support these goals, Leidos is seeking a STEM Intern who is motivated by variety, thrives in a challenging environment, seeks professional growth, and will be a key part of a team developing and extending a variety of applications and components in support of transportation research. This person will play a role in developing and evaluating technologies using various STEM techniques and methodologies.
Systems of interest relate to the following:
• Vehicle-to-infrastructure, Vehicle-to-pedestrian, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications
• Connected and Automated vehicles
• Traffic operations
• Intelligent transportation systems
The successful candidate will have demonstrated interest in various areas of STEM and should have a commitment to deepening their understanding of STEM-related careers through practical and observational work. Internship work could include data collection and analysis, documentation, administrative duties, project support, Agile development and participating in the day-to-day operations of a technical research facility. The candidate should look forward to a real-world lab environment setting and working closely with engineers, software developers, and project managers to advance the state of technology and promote adoption. Throughout this internship, the STEM Intern will learn team processes, technical skills, and other professional skills applicable to the field. The STEM Intern will be part of a growing research team that advances connected and automated vehicle technologies for FHWA.
Primary Responsibilities
Interacting with in-house development teams to identify, understand, and help resolve issues
Performing literature reviews and preparing report
Working with device vendors to procure development hardware
Installing, configuring, and testing hardware and software under direct supervision
Supporting projects with various tasks possibly troubleshooting
Tracking and reporting performance of hardware and software under test
Producing clear and concise records of testing
Writing, reviewing, and/or updating technical documentation
Attending meetings and collect and distribute relevant information
Testing procedures and reviewing documentation
Basic Qualifications
Passing grade in STEM or Computer Science class
The candidate must present a letter from the University showing enrollment or will be enrolled in a bachelor's degree program at the Freshman/Sophomore level land less than 2 years prior relevant experience.
The candidate is pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related STEM field
Familiarity with basic engineering practices
Excellent written/verbal communication skills
Must be able to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance / US Citizenship Required
Preferred Qualifications
Familiar with Agile Development
Experience working with Java, Python, SQL, C++, C#, C
Understanding of connected and/or automated vehicle operations
Awareness of the systems engineering process
Data management
Familiar with ROS, MATLAB, or other professional software packages.
Pay Range:
Pay Range $37,050.00 - $57,000.00 - $76,950.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
