Leidos is seeking a Gas Separation Membrane Engineer to join our research support team in Pittsburgh, PA supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL). This opportunity allows you to work side by side conducting research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to contribute to new areas of basic and applied research; discover, integrate, and mature technology solutions to enhance the nation’s energy foundation and protect the environment for future generations. You will contribute to the development of patents, written reports, journal articles, and contribute to presentations on findings, highlights, and innovative solutions in DOE-sanctioned meetings, scientific conferences, and national committees. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the NETL mission.  Advances in carbon capture technologies are needed to make it an economically viable method for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuels and for producing valuable reuse products. This research focuses on accelerating the development of efficient, cost-effective technologies that meet the programmatic goals for carbon capture. We are developing gas separation membranes to reduce the energy penalty and cost of CO2 separation over conventional technologies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform research at the existing NETL lab that development and testing of gas separation membranes
  • Perform synthesis and fabrication of membranes, including:
    • Synthesis of polymer materials for gas separation membranes at laboratory scale and at larger scale.
    • Post-synthetic functionalization of polymer materials.
    • Fabrication of free-standing polymer films.
    • Fabrication of membrane support materials.
    • Fabrication of thin film composite membranes using a variety of coating techniques.
  • Perform characterization of membranes, including:
    • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
    • X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD)
    • X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)
    • Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)
    • Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA)
    • Pure-gas and mixed-gas permeation measurements
    • Gas sorption measurements
  • Dissemination of results by publication in scientific journals, presentation in scientific forums, and presentation to funding stakeholders.

Required Education & Experience:

  • A PhD degree in chemical engineering, materials science, or mechanical engineering with 2+ years experience in design, synthesis, fabrication, and testing of gas separation membranes. Additional post-doctoral experience is preferred.  A masters degree with 4+ years of experience will also be considered.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
  • Experience in the design and modification and operation of gas permeation and gas adsorption systems to measure membrane performance.
  • Strong track record of publication in high impact, peer-reviewed journal publications, as well as experience in presenting results at relevant scientific forums.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in material design, including synthesis and modification of polymeric gas separation membrane materials.
  • Experience in polymer synthesis and post-synthetic polymer functionalization for gas separation membranes.
  • Experience in inorganic membrane materials and composite organic/inorganic membrane materials is beneficial.
  • Experience in grant writing for federal agencies.
  • Experience and training in laboratory safety procedures.
  • Experience in preparation of scientific manuscripts, peer-review of scientific manuscripts, and presentation of results in a scientific forum.
  • Experience with other gas separation materials for point source carbon capture or direct air capture, including solid sorbents or liquid solvents, is beneficial.
  • Experience with membranes for liquid separations is beneficial.
  • Experience in design, building, operation, and maintenance of gas permeation test equipment.
  • Perform synthesis and fabrication of membranes, including:
    • Synthesis of polymer materials for gas separation membranes at laboratory scale and at larger scale.
    • Post-synthetic functionalization of polymer materials.
    • Fabrication of free-standing polymer films.
    • Fabrication of membrane support materials.
    • Fabrication of thin film composite membranes using a variety of coating techniques.

Salary Range for this position: $95K to $105

Pay Range:

Pay Range $78,000.00 - $120,000.00 - $162,000.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
