Leidos Defense Group is seeking a Research Scientist to assist the Combat Capabilities Development Command-Chemical Biological Center- Protection and Decontamination Division (DEVCOM CBC) team. This scientist will support research efforts for the development, test, and evaluation of novel military specific chemical and biological products. Located at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Edgewood Area, research will support development, test and evaluation of novel materials, equipment, and method applications for chemical and biological protection of the U.S. warfighter. Specific efforts will include development of catalytic materials for individual and collective protection against chemical warfare agents and other toxic industrial chemicals. Efforts will include synthesis of nanoporous materials and other novel materials as well as development and characterization of new polymer materials. Additional responsibilities will include assisting the U.S. Army in research proposal writing to secure future project funding.
Function as a team member with other engineers, chemist and scientists in synthesizing and testing novel materials such as mesoporous metal oxides (MMOs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and new polymers
Operates and maintains analytical test equipment to include, but not limited to, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), small angle X-ray diffraction (SAXS), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM)
Supports diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) analyses
Performs work in accordance published processes and procedures with an emphasis on safety
Generates test data and contributes to technical report development
Supports customer in research proposal writing
Prepares presentations, posters, and technical briefs for various technical communities
Contributes to generating various scientific technical information (STI)
Performs other duties assigned.
Advanced Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 1-2 years’ experience in applying research methodologies for developing innovative materials.
US Citizen; currently possessing DoD “Secret” Clearance
Demonstrated experience in nanoporous material development and testing
Demonstrated experience in operating and maintaining analytical equipment such as XRD, SAXS, TEM, and SEM.
Demonstrated knowledge in analyzing and reporting analytical data
Strong communication and writing skills
Ability to work independently with minimal oversight
Ability to wear laboratory personal protective equipment
Ability to enter the U.S. Army Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (C-PRP)
Published reports related to development and testing of sorbent materials
Experience in working with chemical warfare agents, simulants, toxic industrial materials, and/or toxic industrial chemicals
Experience in proposal and grant writing.
Pay Range:Pay Range $63,050.00 - $97,000.00 - $130,950.00
