Job Description:
The Engineering Technician III performs tasks at the NASA Centers for both Enterprise and Center specific projects and day to day maintenance activities. This role requires the utilization of test equipment to perform network, video, and other telecommunications performance measurements to ensure services are meeting SLAs. This position provides implementation support for Change Requests (CRQ) and touch support for Enterprise and Center operations activities. This role may require working within the Center demarcation facility to terminate commercial carrier circuits and services. This role will provide installation and maintenance support for Center WAN routers, switches, wireless access points, perimeter security equipment, video conferencing equipment (multipoint control units (MCU), encoders/decoders), and other telecommunications devices as required. This job will require skills such as cable fabrication and basic soldering skills for specialized cables and connectors. Requires an understanding of documentation standards for rack and floor layouts for telecommunications equipment and how to estimate for size, weight, and power requirements within telecommunications racks. This role may serve as a supervisory or lead role for other Engineering Technicians.
Some of the specific duties to be performed may include:
Provide operational and technical field support to maintain service performance requirements at each Center and associated component facilities or as designated by the COR or designee.
Provide heightened operational and technical field support during NASA-defined mission critical periods. Heightened support could include dedicated support, reduced response times, etc.
Operate and maintain network services in accordance with Performance Specifications as called out in Attachment J-12, Performance Measures.
Participate in the Communications Program (CP), program, flight, operational readiness reviews, and certification of flight readiness reviews to ascertain whether WAN/LAN services are ready to support missions, programs, flight, and operational users.
Implement new infrastructure components related to infrastructure changes and change requests (CRQs). Perform Remedial Maintenance (RM) and ensure that the maintenance tools, spares, procedures, skills, and response times meet performance metrics.
Operate and maintain, to include installation and removal, the cable plant infrastructure, including UPSs supporting AEGIS Components.
Maintain communications manholes (exclusive of structural maintenance), ducts, handholds, and cable pathways.
Perform corrective and preventative maintenance of IP digital and analog telephone instruments and cable drops.
Provide end-to-end support equipment and services for moves, adds, and changes. These services include instrument placement and relocation, infrastructure management, and other required services to provide telephone-related connectivity within, and external to, the Center such as moving a user's telephone to a new location, changing a user's extension, and changing a user's name in telecommunication systems.
Provide and/or ensure coordination of telephone operator services including placement of international calls, collect calls, conference calls, other operator-assisted calls, and directory assistance.
Basic Qualifications
Must have minimum of 4 years' in a related field along with an Associate of Science (AS) or Associate of Arts (AA) degree or 6 years’ of relevant experience
A minimum of the following certifications; CompTIA Network+ or Security+ or able to certify within 2 years after contract start
Familiar with operating network analysis software such as Wireshark and test equipment such as Fluke network test kits
Solid understanding of key communications tools, such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint
