Job Description:

Southeast Acoustic Measurement Facility (SEAFAC) is the primary acoustic measurement facility for Pacific Fleet submarines.  SEAFAC is located on Back Island, just outside of Ketchikan, Alaska and is operated by NSWCCD Code 70 and their contractor: Leidos.  SEAFAC has a shore facility consisting of six buildings and a pier, as well as two major vessel test sites – a static site where the test vessel is suspended at various depths for specific noise investigations and an underway site for performing noise investigations at various speed conditions and depths.

This position is for a mechanical specialist for the Leidos SEAFAC Operations & Maintenance contract at Back Island, Ketchikan, Alaska.   This position is responsible for maintenance and assembly of equipment, the operation and maintenance of marine equipment and vessels, as well as working with heavy rigging and crane operations at the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility.

This position requires working in a maritime/industrial environment that includes exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust, humidity, and wet environments.  The job will require climbing ladders, entering vessels, and working in hard to reach and high places.

The Mechanical Specialist must be able to:

climb at least 50 feet of rung ladder to access scaffolding, platforms, and other operational positions lift and carry heavy objects of up to 50 pounds distinguish colors remain alert during extended working hours perceive depth work from ladders, sky climbers, and scaffolding work evenings and weekends as required travel to/from the SEAFAC site on a boat have the ability to walk up and down steep inclines (such as piers at low tide) unassisted

This position will be located at a Government site, and will involve significant amounts of interaction with Government personnel.

Primary Responsibilities

This position is expected to follow work processed with minimal direction, and will exercise independent judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Work is performed under the tutelage of more experienced staff when required.  The position requires significant communication with customers and functional peer groups.  Interaction normally involves exchange or presentation of factual information, with the assistance of more senior personnel as needed.

The specialist receives general instruction in the performance of routine work.  Most assignments fall within the purview of standard practices and procedures.  Individual must have the knowledge and ability to understand when standard process and procedures do not apply and to seek help from their manager in those instances.

This position requires the application of basic fundamental, concepts, practices and procedures to acquire the knowledge and experience to become proficient in the job. Complex choice(s) of action are required using considerable breadth of knowledge, logic, and understanding in order to troubleshoot equipment, determine the cause of problems, and then analyze and determine which course of action to take.

Daily tasks will include the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment and machinery.  Operating and maintaining small craft in ocean environments.    

Basic Qualifications

5 years of experience in the professional world serving as a technician.  Preferred qualifications would include someone with experience with various welding techniques and/or experience with marine or industrial coatings.

Ability to read, interpret, and understand blueprints, drawings, as well as implement program directives, safety regulations, and local area instructions.

5 years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment

Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, computer-based maintenance programs

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in a trade field such as electrician, machinist, welder, etc. and have earned certifications/endorsements associated with that field.

Experience with marine or industrial coatings and/or paintings. 

Ability to drive and dock small boats in varying weather conditions as well as deckhand when needed.

Experience with private water and wastewater treatment system maintenance/testing requirements.

Pay Range:

Pay Range $53,300.00 - $82,000.00 - $110,700.00

Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
