Are you interested in improving and shaping the transportation industry in a group of intelligent and motivated individuals? Consider joining the Leidos team operating FHWA’s Saxton Transportation Operations Laboratory (STOL), a USDOT research lab focused on the improvement of transportation operations, safety, mobility, and environmental impacts.
STOL provides a variety of services to support the advancement and deployment of emerging technologies, including vehicle automation and communication. To support these goals, Leidos is seeking an Intern who is motivated by variety, thrives in a challenging environment, seeks professional growth, and will be a key part of a team developing and extending a variety of applications and components in support of transportation research.
This person will play a role in developing and evaluating technologies using various techniques and methodologies. Systems of interest relate to the following:
• Vehicle-to-infrastructure, Vehicle-to-pedestrian, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications
• Connected and Automated vehicles
• Traffic operations
• Intelligent transportation systems
• Traffic simulation and modeling
• Freight operation and automation
The successful candidate will have demonstrated interest in various areas of transportation engineering including traffic flow modeling and simulation, connected and automated vehicle technology, and infrastructure-assisted traffic control and management.
Internship work could include software code development, data collection and analysis, report writing, project support, Agile development and participating in the day-to-day operations of a technical research facility. The candidate will be expected to work onsite for 40 hours/week with a start date of May 22nd, 2023 through August 15th.
The candidate should look forward to a real-world lab environment setting and working closely with engineers, software developers, and project managers to advance the state of technology and promote adoption. Throughout this internship, the Intern will learn team processes, technical skills, and other professional skills applicable to the field.
The Intern will be part of a growing research team that advances connected and automated vehicle technologies for FHWA.
Primary Responsibilities
Interacting with in-house development teams to identify, understand, and help resolve issues
Performing literature reviews and preparing reports
Supporting software development for CDA applications
Working with device vendors to procure development hardware
Installing, configuring, and testing hardware and software under direct supervision
Supporting projects with various tasks
Tracking and reporting performance of hardware and software under test
Writing, reviewing, and/or updating technical documentation
Attending meetings and collecting and distributing relevant information
Basic Qualifications
Candidates must be enrolled in a postgraduate degree program (Masters/JD/PhD)(Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or any closely related field), or equivalent experience and less than 2 years prior relevant experience.
Interest in Transportation Engineering, Connected and Automated Vehicle Technology, and Software Development.
Excellent written/verbal communication skills.
Working knowledge in C++, C#, and/or C
Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Qualifications
Working on an advanced degree in transportation engineering
Familiar with Agile Development
Experience with Java, Python, and SQL
Awareness of the systems engineering process
Familiar with ROS, MATLAB, or other professional software packages.
Pay Range:
Pay Range $53,300.00 - $82,000.00 - $110,700.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
