The Integrated Mission Operations Group at Leidos has an opening for a data scientist to work at our John C. Stennis Space Center, MS location. This is an exciting opportunity to use your physical scientist / oceanographer experience and training in support of the U.S. Naval Oceanography Program. In this mission, we support the Navy’s responsibility to execute operational oceanography; meteorology; precise time and astrometry; and Geospatial Information and Services (GI&S) to the operating forces of the Navy and (DoD). The Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NAVMETOCCOM), with its subordinate organizations, such as the Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), is responsible for collecting, compiling, processing, assessing, and analyzing bathymetric/hydrographic, oceanographic, atmospheric, and other types of environmental data, which have a critical impact on naval operations.
As a data scientist, you will perform as a vital part of an experienced NAVOCEANO-embedded team that develops and maintains operational data products required by military and civilian personnel supporting (primarily) undersea warfare. This data scientist opportunity is a full-time position.
This is not your standard data analyst position – you will work with complex scientific data, numerical models, geospatial systems, Navy-standard algorithms, high resolution databases and technical experts with unique and exciting mission-critical support requirements!

Primary Responsibilities:
- Process, edit, and review oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, and/or geophysical data including the compilation and integration of data from various sources into a final product.
- Develop and implement new and improved methods and techniques used for the collection, processing, and analysis of oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, and/or geophysical survey data.
- Develop or maintain databases of oceanographic, bathymetric, hydrographic, acoustic, or geological observations and data.
- Develop or modify systems used for the collection, databasing, and processing of data, or the generation of products and services for dissemination to Naval customers.
- Work as part of small project teams, and independently, per project planning guidance.
- Work with project leads to ensure your activities meet technical, schedule and cost goals.
- Utilize sound interpersonal skills to communicate progress, problems and potential issues and risks.
- Meet all physical security and information assurance requirements for performing on operational Navy classified and unclassified networks.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in a physical science or related field, or equivalent experience and at least 2 years’ relevant experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively with peers (written and verbal) to explain facts, basic analysis, processes and practices related to technical work areas.
- Ability to understand and solve relevant technical problems following established procedures and policies.
- Ability to work under supervision or independently on moderately complex assignments.
- Must be lifelong learner with curiosity and drive to expand knowledge and skills for the sake of the team.
- Working knowledge and experience with Linux, Windows and scripting languages (e.g. python, shell scripts)
- Experience with database technologies (e.g. SQL, Oracle, HDF5)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Working knowledge of ESRI ArcGIS products and workflows
- Working knowledge and experience with NAVOCEANO Hydrography Dept production processes, tools and products
- Working knowledge and experience with NAVOCEANO information assurance (cyber) requirements and mitigations
- Working knowledge and experience with NAVOCEANO data warehouse operations and large bathymetric data workflows
- Working knowledge and experience with NAVOCEANO bathymetric/hydrographic data ingest, handling and processing techniques

Pay Range:
Pay Range $63,050.00 - $97,000.00 - $130,950.00The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
