Leidos has an excellent opportunity for a System Safety Engineer. This position will work in a dynamic team environment supporting NASA's Cargo Mission Contract (CMC), which  provides pressurized cargo packing and unpacking for the International Space Station Program.

Working under the guidance of seasoned professionals, the successful candidate will perform hazard analysis and failure modes analysis associated with mechanisms, structures, materials, operations, mechanical / electrical systems, etc.  This role is responsible for documenting analysis results and identifying means of controlling risks to render them non-credible for ground and flight operations.  Additionally, the Systems Safety Engineer will perform integrated bag level hazard analysis to identify and mitigate hazards created by multiple items being packed together.

**This position is located on-site at The Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX.**

Candidate must have US Citizenship or US Permanent Residency and the ability to successfully obtain a Public Trust Security Clearance.

Primary Responsibilities:

- Develop data products, including: 906/907 Safety Certifications, Integrated Bag level Hazard Assessments (IBLHA), Safety Data packs (SDP), and Hazard Reports (HR). Present data to customers for review and approval.


- Coordinate with other hardware providers, including International Partners and Civil Servants and Contractors at various NASA centers (MSFC, GSFC, JSC, KSC) to ensure requirements meet compliance standards and work integrated safety hazards to completion.


- Interface with CMC Engineering to analyze and recommend safety criteria in system design, equipment, and procedures to control or eliminate hazards to spaceflight crew.


- Identify safety controls and track to closure.


- Evaluate the interrelationship of system safety requirements with designers, analysts, and other stakeholders to develop requirements that ensure adherence to NASA safety requirements.


- Coordinate resolution of safety and / or hardware issues as well as serve a point of contact for all aspects of a particular product or vehicle flight.

- Perform Reliability assessments and develop Initial Assessments of Criticality (IAC) to determine criticality of flight hardware.

- Coordinate IAC with Reliability and Maintainability Working Group (R&MWG) and obtain approvals at program level.

Minimum Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Industrial etc.) or related field (ex. Sciences) and at least 1 year of relevant experience

- Experience in System Safety Engineering

- Ability to collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams

- Problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills

- Strong communication and presentation skills, both oral and written

- MS Office Suite

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience in a NASA System Safety Engineering capacity

- Experience with Flight Electrical and Mechanical hardware

- Knowledge of SSP 30599 Safety Review Process, SSP 51721 ISS Safety Requirements, and SSP 30234 ISS R&M Requirements

- Formal education in System Safety Engineering  

Pay Range:

Pay Range $46,800.00 - $84,600.00
