Leidos Public Health Division is seeking multiple Scientific Software Developers, contingent upon contract award, to support its Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) public health programs. The specific objective of this team is to build, support and expand CDC’s data analytics, forecasting, modeling, and outbreak response activities.

These roles are fully remote – candidates must currently be located in the United States and have resided in the United States for 3 consecutive years.

Requires US Citizen or Green Card status with the ability to obtain a NACI clearaence.

We are looking for candidates with experience developing scientific software applications. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Assess the quality of the forecasting & modeling software codes to determine what can be reused versus a need for a rebuild of code to improve efficiency, hygiene, effectiveness, and determine if a new framework will need to be utilized.
  • Translate and develop enterprise grade software and tools using open-source tools.
  • Review existing codebases for models using a variety of programming languages including Java, C++, R, Python, Julia, and Rust
  • Recommend and implement refactoring of these models to improve code quality, performance, and reusability.
  • Support development of comprehensive testing plans and suites for selected models
  • Support the translation of these models into common software frameworks.
  • Facilitate the initial implementation in both CDC computing environment and cloud-based environment.
  • Support the development of open-source frameworks for implementing infectious disease transmission models of varying complexities, along with accompanying statistical inference methods.
  • Support the development technical documentation for software frameworks and user guides

This role provides the opportunity to work across a number of technologies within a growing data analytics discipline at the CDC.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data Science, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Computer engineering, Computer or Management Information Systems, (or similar scientific degree) with 4-8 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Programming experience in several of the following languages - Python, R, Julia, Rust, SAS, Java, and/or C++
  • Comfortable and familiar with using open-source tools.
  • High proficiency in performing data cleaning, wrangling, manipulation, and transformation to prepare data for visualization and analysis.
  • Experience with Git, various flavors of Linux, and Windows operating systems.
  • Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning techniques.
  • Knowledge of Agile Development methodologies and the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Experience in supporting software testing
  • Capable of working independently or as a collaborative team player, excelling in a dynamic and occasionally fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Data Science, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science or Computer engineering, Computer or Management Information Systems
  • Expert programming skills in one or more of the following languages - Python, R, Julia, Java, C++, and/or Rust, especially Python and R.
  • 2+ years of practical experience in developing and enhancing scientific applications,  with a particular focus on infectious disease prediction, forecasting and simulation models
  • Understanding and expertise in statistical modeling techniques, methods, tools, and calibration & fitting procedures. 
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with academic and research communities
  • Application security support expertise equivalent to a Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional (CSSLP), 
  • Experience merging and integrating disparate datasets to develop predictive and simulation models.
  • Experience working with one or more cloud environments such as Azure, AWS, and GCP – especially Azure

Pay Range:

Pay Range $78,000.00 - $120,000.00 - $162,000.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
