Are you ready for an exciting adventure? Leidos is seeking an experienced Facilities Engineer to join the team managing and maintaining facilities and infrastructure at US Antarctic Program (USAP) Locations. As the Engineer, you'll provide facility engineering and life safety systems support for research stations in Antarctica while overseeing the maintenance of buildings and installed systems.

In this role, you'll also have the opportunity to perform facility condition assessments and develop and propose facility upgrades and replacement projects. The best part? The successful candidate will deploy yearly to Antarctica for 4 to 6 months to work at the USAP stations. Deployment to McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and/or South Pole Station, Antarctica is required of this position annually for a time period of 4 to 6 months. Eligibility for deployment will require physical and dental evaluations with parameters determined by the National Science Foundation (NSF). 

Per contract requirements, US Citizenship is required. 

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take upwards of 4 months.

The expected salary range for this position is $95,000 - $120,000 annually (not inclusive of uplift bonus pay during deployment).

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision:  Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • Mission:  To provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines.  The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

Your Main Objective:

  • Provide professional engineering and technical guidance on the design, installation, maintenance, and modification of facilities and equipment.

  • Serve as engineering advisor and analyst to the Facilities leadership team and Station Management by providing engineering advice, analysis, and assistance on a range of subjects, including physical security, building safety, fire protection, property accountability, preventive maintenance planning, and emergency response planning.

  • Ensure the station requirements for a safe and continuous operation are met; evaluate facility infrastructure equipment and systems for maintainability, reliability, and longevity.

  • Perform facility condition assessments; develop and propose facility upgrade and replacement projects.

  • Assist with maintaining the inventory of buildings and installed systems and establish maintenance and replacement cycles.

  • Accurately procure and track maintenance materials, safety supplies, and spare components.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable building codes and standards; proactively identify unsafe conditions or hazards and communicate them immediately and effectively.

  • Comply with applicable safety, environment, health, and waste management policies and procedure.

  • Although assigned to one Antarctic Station, travel to and work at other locations may be required.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Sets You Apart:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university in mechanical or electrical engineering; 8 years of job-related experience will be considered in lieu of degree.

  • Possess professional knowledge of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering concepts and principles.

  • Experience in asset reliability-centered maintenance strategies targeting preventive/predictive maintenance economic value using an enterprise-level computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).

  • Experience and knowledge regarding the planning, development, and implementation of facility asset rebuilds or replacements.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with management and staff to present, defend, negotiate, and clarify programs, decisions, and recommendations.

  • Maintenance or construction experience, including managing changes, quality control, deliverables, redlining drawings, and other activities supporting work completion.

  • Ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, and diagrams.

  • Ability to perform physical activities, including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold, dry, high-elevation environments.

  • Experience with procurement and material tracking.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite of applications.

You Might Also Have:

  • Experience performing maintenance or planning and executing projects in remote and logistically challenging locations.

  • Experience with resource-loaded scheduling.

  • Experience with fixed fire safety systems, including alarm, water-based automatic sprinkler systems, and special hazards automatic suppression systems.

  • Experience in Antarctica or similar extreme cold environments.
