The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) is seeking an Research Engineer to join our team in Pittsburgh, PA. In this role, you will support cutting edge research to provide actionable scientific and data-driven results to inform Direct Air Carbon capture advancement with a specific emphasis on pilot projects. You will perform engineering work in R&D, design, development, integration, operations, and troubleshooting environments. You will develop and apply engineering standards and procedures, and provide advice on issues within the engineering field. You will also collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to design, execute and evaluate experiments, and communicate to a variety of audiences (i.e., conferences, internal meetings).

As the Research Engineer, you will provide necessary support for installation, startup and operation of the research, development, and test systems that comprise the Direct Air Capture Center (Center) facility at NETL. The Center’s mission is to support research, development, and testing of prototype technologies for direct air capture and storage of carbon. Your role will be critical to support the DACC mission.

Location: Candidates must be local to the Pittsburgh, PA area, as this position is onsite at the NETL campus in Pittsburgh. Remote work is possible up to 20%.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with the NETL Center Technical Director and testing partners in the creation and modification of experimental protocols.
  • Conduct collaborative R&D with testing partners using Center test systems.
  • Design experiments, record data, making informed recommendations to support CO2 Direct Air Capture pilot project set up and experimentation.
  • Troubleshoot pilot project equipment.
  • Support the preparation and modification of Safety Analysis and Review System (SARS) packages associated with safe operation of the Center.
  • Communicate with colleagues across multiple areas (project managers, other professional resources, etc.) to solve complex problems that require deliberate, thorough analysis
  • Perform, or manage a provider to perform, install, configuration, upgrade/enhancement, and troubleshooting activities of aligned technologies.
  • Perform conceptual design to support the activities leading to the creation of new or improvements to existing products or product applications.
  • Prepare design, analysis, test requirements, performance, schedule, and cost information as required in the assigned area of responsibility for existing or new products.
  • Work independently to achieve day-to-day objectives with significant impact on operational results or project deliverables.
  • Produce journal-quality data sets and analysis documents using Center test systems.
  • Assist in writing methods, results, and data interpretations for publications in high quality, scientific peer-reviewed journals, and technical reports. 
  • Develop and present results for oral or poster presentation at staff meetings and professional conferences. 
  • Provide weekly and monthly technical updates to research team members and project management.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (e.g., chemical, environmental, industrial), or related scientific/engineering field with 3+ years related experience or Master’s degree in engineering (e.g., chemical, environmental, industrial) and 1+ year related experience.
  • Recent experience in a Research and Development environment, with experience on a lab to pilot scale.
  • Recent experience in designing experiments.
  • Basic chemistry and analytical skills.
  • Experience collaborating on a dynamic team of interdisciplinary researchers including geographers, geologists, data scientists, web developers, engineers, and more.
  • Strong skills in organization, communication, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to learn and apply standard policies and procedures.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus.
  • U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in data analysis, report development, scientific writing, and presentation of results.
  • Experience in communicating results to a range of audiences.
  • Labview experience
  • Worked with gas cylinders, piping, flow rates and measurements
  • Documenting experiments
  • Analytical thinking

Salary Range for this position: $80K to $90K

Pay Range:

Pay Range $63,050.00 - $113,975.00

The Leidos pay range for this job level is a general guideline only and not a guarantee of compensation or salary. Additional factors considered in extending an offer include (but are not limited to) responsibilities of the job, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity, alignment with market data, applicable bargaining agreement (if any), or other law.
