Are you a seasoned Environmental Health and Safety Engineer (SSE) looking for your next exciting opportunity? The Leidos Corporation is seeking a Sr. Environmental Health and Safety Engineer who will support U.S. research stations/ locations in Antarctica with Integrated Safety Management of sustaining operations and maintenance (O&M) and oversight of annual construction projects. The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Safety and Health team working on the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP) contract. The SSE will be assisting station and project management teams with integrating safety & health, risk management considerations and provide safety oversight over a wide range of activities throughout the program.

USAP projects range from civil work, utilities, marine-based projects, new facilities, renovations, repairs, and field science construction. ASC support will be a mix of self-performed and subcontracted work. This position is a hybrid of remote work and requires periodic and perhaps multiple deployments to Antarctica in a single year.

About the Antarctic Support Contract:

Leidos Antarctic Support Contract (ASC) is the prime contractor to the National Science Foundation (NSF) in support of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). Leidos supports the NSF’s Office of Polar Program’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics by aligning with their Mission and Vision Statements:

  • Vision Expanding our scientific reach in Antarctica through increased operational and logistical effectiveness.

  • MissionTo provide the operational and logistical platform necessary for the U.S. to conduct world-class science in Antarctica and maintain its active and influential presence on the continent.

Leidos ASC provides science and logistics support for approximately 150 science and technical events across three geographically remote research stations; McMurdo Station, Palmer Station, and South Pole Station and several deep field sites across Antarctica. Each station or field site supports world class research across multiple science disciplines.  The planning and implementation of science support requirements in Antarctica is a critical part of our mission.

The SSE position is expected to deploy each season, typically during the Antarctic austral summer. Deployments may sometime be required during August to October and/or February to June. Total deployment time will be scaled to the needs of the ASC program and sustaining safety needs, typically a minimum of 2 months and no greater than 4 to 6 months.

Due to contract requirements, US Citizenship is required.

Must obtain a Public Trust security clearance prior to start date. This process could take up to 4 months.

Our anticipated salary range for this role is between $90,000 and $105,000 annually.

The Challenge:

While remote / stateside:

  • Collaborate in the development and review of annual USAP projects and plans, including the development of new initiatives, incident trend analytics and reporting, review of existing SOPs, application of Continuous Improvement & Lessons Learned, department procurement and calibration facilitation, and assist in planning resource-loaded schedules.

  • Work with other ASC and USAP Stakeholders on effectiveness reviews and in developing innovative and risk-integrated approaches to O&M and construction for US Antarctic Locations.

  • Interacts with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner, on an as needed basis.

  • Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with cohorts as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, providing various training courses, attending staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.

While deployed:

  • Integrate in the various ASC Station and Project management teams to implement processes and procedures of the sustaining ASC Safety Team's annual management plan.

  • Engage regularly with engineering, planning and controls, and project managers to ensure that designs are inclusive of relevant safety and health regulatory requirements and industry standards.

  • Work in conjunction with construction managers and project managers to ensure project safety plans are developed to capture OSHA and other applicable safety standard requirements.

  • Work with science implementers, construction superintendents, trade supervisors, and work crews to ensure safety and health requirements are integrated during the seasonal evolutions.

  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safe practices are integrated on the job site.

  • Complies with applicable safety, environmental, health, and waste management policies and procedure. Perform other duties as assigned.

What Sets You Apart:

  • BS/BA in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering or related field is required. Candidates with related Masters or higher with unrelated undergrad degrees may be considered. Equivalent relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of a degree when accompanied with professional certification such as CHST.

  • Minimum of five years’ experience with safety and health rules, regulations, standards, and risk management practices specific to construction and O&M industry. Working knowledge of industrial hygiene principles is required.

  • Master Degree in Safety or Environmental Science, Construction, or Environmental Engineering

  • CSP, CIH, CHMM, and/or CHST professional credentials
