Job Description

Leidos is searching for an Optical Test Engineer to support AFRL’s Dynamic Infrared Missile Evaluation (DIME) Laboratory located on Wright Patterson Air Force Base, OH.  The successful candidate will utilize a strong engineering or physics background designing, testing, modeling, simulating, and analyzing the next generation of infrared countermeasure techniques. This position requires at least a bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (optical, engineering physics, or similar) or physics. Candidates must be US citizens and be capable of obtaining a SECRET clearance.

This position will support multiple simultaneous research efforts within the laboratory requiring skills including hands-on experimentation, calibrated testbed design, modeling and simulation of aircraft/missile engagements, and large-scale data manipulation and analysis.  Addressing our customers’ challenging mission requirements necessitates research and development of new capabilities as well as making improvements to existing systems.  The successful candidate will be required to quickly develop an understanding of legacy efforts and engineer improvements to meet new requirements.  Additionally, the engineer will be called upon to develop new and innovative solutions to challenging problems, helping our customers provide solutions for the warfighter.  The successful candidate will work as part of an integrated team but should also be proficient at conducting independent research.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, procure parts for, build, align and calibrate custom testbeds and test equipment
  • Design and execution of exploitation testing of electro-optical systems
  • Perform analysis of large data sets and develop tools for visualization and manipulation of the data
  • Work well in a small team environment and independently
  • Work on Wright Patterson Air Force Base in a USAF provided laboratory
  • Be familiar with Linux, Windows, MS Office tools like PowerPoint and Excel, MATLAB, Zemax OpticStudio (or equivalent)
  • Develop technical solutions that require collaboration with internal experts, deep analyses and understanding of impact on end-product/solution
  • Participate in flight tests to assess infrared countermeasure techniques
  • Brief project results at workshops / conferences

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in an engineering discipline (optical, engineering physics, or similar) or physics with 4+ years of experience, Masters with 2+ years of experience, or Ph.D. in technical domain.
  • Must be a U.S Citizen
  • Qualified candidates must be able to obtain a Secret security clearance (no clearance needed to start)
  • Experience with lasers, broadband light sources, optics, electro-optics, detectors, cameras, calibration equipment, and diagnostic equipment
  • MATLAB and/or Python programming experience
  • Optical design software experience (e.g. Zemax, Code-V, etc.)
  • Strong communication and organization skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in optical engineering or physics
  • Strong statistics education or experience
  • Experience calibrating IR sensors for radiometric measurements
  • Stray light analysis experience
  • 2+ years experience in the electro-optical and/or infrared domain

Pay Range:

Pay Range $81,250.00 - $146,875.00
