Job Requisition:Paralegal/Legal Assistant (Kansas City, MO)
This position is in support of the United States Attorney’s Office in Kansas City, MO at 400 East 9th Street. The estimated length of this assignment is expected to be September 1, 2019 - August 30, 2020, with the potential for FOUR (4) one-year options ending August 30, 2024.
Contractor personnel may be required to operate a government vehicle during the performance of duties associated with this position. Driving is for official business only and requires appropriate approvals as established by USAO WDMO vehicle policy.
Contractor may be required to travel to Springfield and Jefferson City branch office locations at the Government’s expense to provide training and support at these locations as well with proper approvals.
Under the direction of the Monetary Penalties Unit Supervisor and Asset Forfeiture Supervisor, the contractor will be responsible for collection of court ordered restitution/fines of criminal and civil defendants. This could include, but not limited to, conducting financial investigations; drafting of legal documents and filing legal documents using ECF; preparing garnishments; sending demand letters; filing liens; running credit reports; preparing and sending subpoenas; and talking with debtors, victims and court personnel. Performs other miscellaneous tasks.
*Proven excellent written and oral communication skills.
*Requires paralegal certificate. An equivalent level of legal training may be substituted with the approval of the COR.
*At least one year of professional experience with basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum.
*Must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
*Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
*Role also requires basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources.
*Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
*Proficient in Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, MS Access or other data bases), Word Perfect and Adobe Acrobat Professional or similar applications.
*Demonstrated ability to review a wide variety of documents, both legal and non-legal documents, including Motions and briefs, and a variety of legal correspondence.
*Attention to detail.
*Some walking, standing, bending and ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
*Ability to obtain a security clearance.
*Valid Driver’s License.
*Must be a U.S. Citizen.
*Experience working in a Government and/or Litigation Support environment in conjunction with basic qualifications, preferred.
*Automated litigation support experience (i.e. Concordance, Summation, iConnect, CaseMap, TimeMap. Sanction, etc...), valued.
*Trial experience helpful.
*Current or active clearance.
