Leidos currently has an opening for a Research Scientist/Engineer to work at the US Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) in Morgantown WV. The Research Scientist/Engineer in this position will conduct systems level modeling of super critical CO2 power systems. The objective is to define optimized “exemplar” system configurations and develop understanding of the characteristics these systems for the purposes of research community guidance and program decision making. The models will be exercised to examine off-design performance of the direct-fired cycle. Efficiency over a range of load conditions and ambient temperatures will be determined. Initial controls may also be implemented.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Responsibilities are functional in nature and performed under limited supervision. Specific tasks include, but are not limited to:
- Develop modeling and simulation computational technology as a team member in a collaborative environment on projects ranging from individual process units for power generation or coal conversion plants to entire plants. Goals include the development of steady-state and dynamic process models which will be used to examine off-design performance and control, with emphasis on supercritical CO2 power cycles.
- Develop procedures to estimate modeling uncertainty during process upscaling.
- Provide support to meet NETL and LRST reporting and administrative requirements.
- Education: A Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or a closely related field with emphasis on developing advanced computer models for the steady-state and dynamic modeling of coal-based power plant process units and overall plants and/or coal conversion systems;
- At least one year of experience in research and development applied to steady-state and dynamic simulation of process engineering systems, and a strong background in thermal and fluid sciences with advanced computer modeling experience; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Extensive experience using commercial steady-state and dynamic process modeling software including Aspen Plus, Aspen Plus Dynamics, Aspen Custom Modeler, DYNSIM, and risk analysis software.
- Ability to apply dynamic modeling techniques to various process units such as CO2 capture systems (solid sorbents, solvents), heat exchanger networks, air separation, power generation, and energy integrated systems.
- The ability to implement basic controls in the Aspen Plus software environment.
- Experience in dynamic control of energy systems for power generation
- Knowledge with the optimization of energy systems and uncertainty quantification
- Knowledge of both indirect-fired and direct-fired supercritical CO2 power cycles.
- Ability and knowledge related to modeling devices for CO2 capture in fossil energy plants, with emphasis on pre-and post-combustion CO2 capture for coal-fired power plants and coal conversion systems.
- Ability to prepare models and evaluate their performance in simulating carbon capture technologies.
- Ability to quantify model uncertainty propagation during process upscaling.
- Experience with the Carbon Capture Simulation Initiative’s (CCSI) open source software product called FOQUS (Framework for Optimization Quantification of Uncertainty and Surrogates)
- Experience with Matlab software.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary/multi-organization team of co-investigators from diverse disciplines, orientations, and organizations.
- demonstrated ability to author high quality research publications
- This position requires extensive interface with customers and potential collaborative partners, so excellent verbal and written communication skills are a necessity.
- Sound knowledge of Bayesian hierarchical modeling, multi-scale modeling, UQ and Gaussian processes is preferred.
