Job Description:
  • The Leidos multi-functional materials research team, based at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Washington, D.C. seeks a part-time Materials Scientist who will contribute to a project "3D Microstructural Analysis of Iron Foams." This is an opportunity to develop a new materials research project at NRL.

    Primary Responsibilities

    The successful candidate will be available for work on-site at NRL as well as at partnered universities or other research labs, and will have the capability to:
    • Prepare iron-based foams and study their structural evolution during repeated oxidation and reduction at high temperature;
    • Operate standard laboratory equipment related to this project, including high-temperature furnaces, gas flow systems, a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray imaging systems;
    • Implement tomography reconstruction methods;
    • Use data processing and numeral and image analysis packages, such as ImageJ, Matlab, and 3D visualization software such as Amira.

    Basic Qualifications
    • B.S. and 2+ years of relevant experience. Or, M.S. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a similar field with 2+ years of experience with materials synthesis and characterization. Or, Ph.D. in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or a similar field.
    • Ability to obtain a DoD Secret Clearance.
    • The ability to present their results in oral and written form, confer with clients, and assist in preparation of journal manuscripts.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience with manuscript authorship and conference presentation is preferred.
    • Previous experience and expertise with the relevant equipment and methods is preferred.
