Senior Human Factors Researcher/Engineer

Job Description:

Leidos has an opening for a Senior Human Factors Researcher/Design Engineer.  The Human Factors Researcher will support the Human Factors and Food Research Section on the Human Health and Performance Contract at Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Our team provides research, analysis, evaluation, and usability testing of hardware and software interfaces for cockpits, habitats, spacesuits, and equipment, including computer displays and controls, workstation systems, and other types of crew interfaces.  A unique aspect of this position is the opportunity to work as a human factors researcher, as well as an applied practitioner.

Primary Responsibilities

This position serves as the Discipline Scientist for the risk of inadequate human-computer interaction (HCI).  This position will have significant involvement in a new line of research focused on developing standards, guidelines, and intelligent systems to support astronauts on future long-duration missions which will require autonomous operation.  Areas of research interest include methods for measuring workload, situation awareness, and trust in automation.  This position is primarily focused on the management of Human Research Program (HRP) science tasks, and interacting with internal and external researchers.  This position also supports other programs such as Orion, Commercial Crew, Gateway, and Extra Vehicular Activities (EVA).  For example, the Advanced EVA Informatics project includes tasks such as developing an architecture for actionable data to be presented to crewmembers during EVAs, conducting a crew input trade study, and providing informatics development support.

Basic Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in human-computer interaction, human factors, cognitive psychology, or a closely related technical discipline, and 6 years of experience in the field or related area.  The candidate must have demonstrated experience in human-computer interaction, displays and controls, or cockpit design, as well as conducting Human-in-the-Loop (HITL) testing.  Must have demonstrated skills in proposal writing, research/experimental design, human factors consultations, task analysis, prototyping, usability testing, statistical analysis, and report writing.  Must have demonstrated experience using prototyping (e.g., Axure), survey generation (e.g., SurveyCrafter), screen capture (e.g., Morae), and statistical tools (e.g., SPSS/STATA, R).  Qualified candidates will have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work successfully in a multidisciplinary team.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with requirements development and verification is desired.  Experience collaborating across disciplines, laboratories, or agencies, familiarity with industry standards (e.g., MIL-STD-1472, NASA-STD-3001) and advanced technologies (e.g., eye trackers, physiological measures, mixed reality interfaces) is a plus. 

This position requires successful completion of a government background check to access government facilities and/or systems. If you are not a United States Citizen or Green Card holder, this check could take 12-18 months to complete.
