Aerial Sensor Operator Instructor

Job Description:

Airborne Solutions at Leidos currently has an opening for an Aerial Sensor Operator Instructor to work in our El Paso, TX office. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the U.S. Army’s Airborne Reconnaissance Low Enhanced (ARL-E) mission. In this role, you will train the next generation of Army soldiers in operations of the mission equipment payload of the ARL-E system


The ARL-E Aerial Sensor Operator Instructor is a member of the Training team and will assess training requirements, design curriculum, develop, validate, and instruct all ARL-E training materials to Active Duty Army soldiers and contractor personnel.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Create, validate and execute ground-based academic training in a classroom as well as mission-oriented, scenario-based flight training
  • Create, maintain, and document student training progress, using appropriate Army standards and forms
  • Create, update and modify training items in appropriate Army databases
  • Assist with test and evaluation of Mission Equipment Payload (MEP) systems as part of validation of training
  • Coordinate with product team leads and subcontractors to ensure all training information is complete and accurate; coordinate schedules for validation of training material, and providing quality in-flight instruction to active duty soldiers, ensuring they are deployment ready at the completion of training
  • Maintain flight instructor and/or standards instructor qualification/currency as outlined by company procedures and service guidance
  • Will work with the Systems Integration team as a Field Service Representative (FSR) between training events. FSR duties will include sensor system remove and replace, post installation testing, troubleshooting, and functional checks
  • Travel to CONUS customer and company locations required, as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of eight (8) years of experience; additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Minimum of 500 hours of radar experience on one of following systems APY-7, APS-115, APS-137, APS-147, VaDER 
  • Active FAA Class II Medical Certificate or an ability to obtain
  • Experience with Airborne ISR, specifically in the areas of training and testing and operational flight experience
  • Minimum 300 instructor flight hours as either/or combination of Aerial Sensor Operator/TACCO/FCO/CSO on similar aircraft (EMARSS/Liberty (MC-12), ARL-M (DHC-7), AC-130, RC-46, P-3/EP-3, P-8, PC-12, SADO (DHC-8)
  • Deployed tactical experience working with ground teams from the air
  • Prior experience with aircraft operations with respect to safety of operations, personnel, and equipment
  • Experience with Imagery and/or SIGINT collection and analysis
  • Current DOD Secret Clearance with TS/SCI
  • Must be a US Citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a formal schoolhouse military instructor
  • Experience providing Tactical ISR support to Special Operations Forces
  • Experience with one or more of the following sensors:
  • MX Series EO/IR sensors
  • MTI/Synthetic Aperture Radar
  • HyperSpectral Imaging
  • Knowledge and experience using Training Development Capability (TDC)
  • Army Basic Instructor Course (ABIC) graduate or equivalent
  • Current FAA Class II flight Physical
  • Current Altitude Chamber
  • Ability to provide meaningful verbal and written feedback to students
