NASA, working with private industry, is planning our return to the Lunar Surface. For the first time since 1972, we are planning boots on the Moon. For the first time ever, we will conduct Lunar Polar explorations on the surface. These explorations will include both human and robotic missions. Join the team planning the first robotic lunar polar surface exploration. At NASA in Silicon Valley, we are designing a Lunar prospecting mission to search for water ice in a polar region on the Moon. This rover will launch as early as 2022.
To operate at a lunar pole, a rover must cope with fast changing surface lighting conditions, must work around those constraints to allow the solar panels to charge the battery and generate power, must work in temperatures as low as 40 degrees kelvin, and must meet the mission objectives of exploring different environments in search of lunar ice.
This position will work with the science and mission planning lead to design a mission planning process for tactical and strategic mission planning for a lunar rover, to fit the unique mission constraints of operating at a lunar pole. The scope includes development of the pre-mission traverse and activity plan as well as designing the mission planning and re-planning process. You will work with scientists and mission engineers to design the mission planning and re-planning process. Before launch day, we have to plan the rover traverse paths on the Moon, design and simulate mission procedures, flight rules and command and control methods. We have to train the team, simulate the mission and conduct exercises in mission planning. If you have space flight mission or related experience, join us in this historical endeavor.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field and a minimum of 8 related experience in the following:
- Experience in process design
- Experience in working with multi-disciplinary teams
- Experience in synthesizing inputs from multiple disciplines into a coherent plan
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Experience in space mission planning design
- Experience in space mission planning execution
This position requires successful completion of a government background check to access government facilities and/or systems. Work cannot begin on the contract without a fully adjudicated security clearance. If you are not a United States Citizen or Green Card holder, this check could take 12-18 months to complete.
