Job Description:

The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for a Research Assistant to support the Naval Submarine Medical Research Laboratory (NSMRL) in Groton, CT.  NSMRL conducts research and investigates the effects of medical, psychological, and performance issues associated with the health and performance of naval personnel in operational and non-operational settings.

Primary Responsibilities

The ideal candidate shall:

  • Update, maintain, and retrieve information held on computer and database systems in the Submarine Medicine and Survival Systems Department.
  • Transfer paper-based records and electronic data downloaded from external sources onto computerized systems.
  • Enter and track submarine atmosphere sample data in a database, from shipping to the submarine point of contact to inclusion in a finished report.
  • Generate and issues letters to submarines that have taken part in sampling, which include the results of the sampling and analysis.
  • Import Excel spreadsheet laboratory reports into a database of submarine atmospheric contaminants.
  • Perform data entry tasks; enter submarine atmosphere data from both handwritten logs and CD-ROM and floppy disks received from the submarines into a database.
  • Coordinate receipt of badges, issuance to submarines for sampling, and overall tracking of badge orders and analysis.
  • Adhere to security procedures to protect the database from accidental or intentional damage or loss. Perform database and program file backups, as needed.
  • Maintain and organize paper and electronic files/documents; provide planning and scheduling support.
  • Provide proofreading, formatting, and editing support for reports, manuscripts, research protocols, presentations, posters, and other products.
  • Perform other administrative tasks as necessary (e.g., perform daily mail pickup, submit purchase requests, scan documents).

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must have completed a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited US university, or international university of equivalent standard, in a scientific field.
  • The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level.  Preference will be given to a candidate who already has this clearance level.
  • Due to Federal contract requirements, US citizenship is required.
  • Candidates must demonstrate expert working knowledge in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Candidates must display a willingness to be exposed to a broad research and management experience in the human performance domain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant experience in human/animal subject research within a Military setting.
  • Demonstrated evidence of scientific achievement as shown by the publication of articles and reports and membership in scientific societies
  • Knowledge of and experience writing and editing technical and scientific research information
  • Demonstrated ability to speak well and concisely and confer with professional colleagues on a peer basis.
