Job Description:

Leidos’s Military and Veterans Solutions Business Unit has an opening for a Sleep and Fatigue Research Assistant. The Sleep and Fatigue Research Assistant will perform laboratory and/or field experimental work, undertake research projects in collaboration with government and contract principal investigators, and make innovative contributions pertaining to laboratory and/or field experimental procedures. The primary responsibility for the Sleep and Fatigue Research Assistant is to conduct research studies with a focus on physiology and performance as it relates to sleep and fatigue, exercise physiology, and military performance in laboratory and field-based environments.

Primary Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

-     Recruit, obtain informed consent, screen, select, and collecting data from active duty, wounded warrior, and civilian populations for human subjects research protocols

--   Perform inventory of equipment and keep equipment secure

-        Collect physiological, cognitive, and health data from human subjects, abiding by human research protection regulations.

-       Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment such as eye-tracking and high-density EEG systems, polysomnography (PSG) sleep systems, and field equipment such as mobile biosensors and other technologies.

-       Create and maintain databases for research projects, identify missing data points and create methods for analyzing data with missing data points, conduct statistical analyses, and write up project results.

-  Conduct technical/scientific writing to generate standard operating procedures and protocol development, journal publications, conference abstracts and presentations, technical reports, and other written deliverables to the customer.

-       Independently collect, process, analyze, and report on study data including eye-tracking, cognitive performance, PSG, and other forms of physical and behavioral performance data.

-     Establish procedures to collect, input, organize, and manage data from all laboratory testing instruments, creating solutions to integrate data from stand-alone systems into one database and data analysis system. Conduct data management and analysis using these systems.

-     Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, physiology, exercise science, psychology, or a related scientific field from an accredited college or university. Two or more years of professional experience is required.

  • Previous experience with laboratory equipment used for data collection in sleep (e.g. PSG, actigraphy), cognitive performance (e.g., ePrime), and physiology (e.g., salivary assessments, blood sampling, EEG, eye-tracking). Understand usage and maintenance of equipment necessary to obtain and analyze data. Strength in troubleshooting and testing new equipment is desired.

  • Strong background in data processing using software programs such as Microsoft Excel, Matlab, Labview, or other programs. Ability to write program scripts and use macros in Excel and other data analysis programs.

  • Strong technical ability to work with new wearable and non-wearable biosensor technologies and software applications

  • Solid background in human physiology and cognitive science research methodology. Ability to interact positively and in a professional manner within a research environment. Proven ability to read, comprehend, and discuss research materials.

  • Excellent critical thinking with problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting. Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.

  • Ability to work non-regular hours (e.g., nights and weekends) as needed for data collection. Ability to travel as needed.

  • Strong computer skills and experience with software such as MS Access, Excel, Word, and other programs for the PC; able to operate and troubleshoot, as necessary, laboratory machinery that is computer controlled.

  • US Citizenship required.  Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.
