Leidos is seeking an Meteorology Intern located in Alexandria, VA.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Defense Group at Leidos currently has an opening for a Summer Meteorologist Intern in our Alexandria, VA office. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the Environmental Data Enterprise (EDE) program at the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA). In this position, the intern would work with DoD and industry scientists developing a real-time verification and validation (V&V) system for numerical weather prediction (NWP) models in support of atmospheric transport and dispersion (AT&D) activities around the world. Users of the EDE include members of all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, Department of Defense, industry partners, and first responders looking for the best meteorological inputs for AT&D models such as HPAC/SCIPUFF.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include developing and implementing a V&V metric applicable to the AT&D related to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) events. This metric will be calculated using open source software and meteorological data from multiple providers across the government, military, and private sector. Work on the V&V system will be presented to DoD and Leidos supervisors at the end of the internship.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
-Pursuing a Bachelor’s or post-Graduate Degree Degree Meteorology, Atmospheric Science, or a related discipline with an average 3.0 GPA.
-Must have experience with coding and scripting in a Unix environment.
-Must be familiar with statistical methods as they apply to the atmospheric sciences.
-U.S. Citizenship required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
-Experience programming in Python.
-Experience handling large datasets, including NWP data in grib2 and netCDF formats, and observations in multiple formats.
-Experience with AT&D models such as HPAC/SCIPUFF.
