The Electronic Warfare Division has an opening for a Missile Control Engineer with either Seeker Performance Modeling or GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control) expertise.
Leidos is looking for an early or mid-career level engineer with experience in modeling missile seeker performance and/or a GNC background to support our growing work with the Air Force Research Lab at Eglin, FL. This is a technical engineering position to support the conceptual design of an advanced missiles with redundant control systems. Modeling and Simulation of missile performance will be conducted which requires detailed modeling of seeker performance as well as developing advanced autopilots. Performance analysis versus existing air-to-air missiles will also be conducted. You will have the opportunity to work directly with the US Air Force on the development of an advanced air-to-air weapon system.

Apply your prior experience in modeling seeker performance and/or developing autopilots as part of a team creating a conceptual design for a next generation air-to-air missile. Use your ability to perform or support 6-DOF simulations to compare the performance of this advanced conceptual missile to that of missiles already in inventory. Utilize standard metrics of missile performance to communicate the benefits of this missile to Air Force stakeholders. After successfully demonstrating performance through modeling and simulation and through supporting hardware development in the lab, move to the next step of generating flight control software to support flight tests.
Experience Level: Entry level candidates should have 2-3 years’ experience in industry or a Master’s in a relevant field. These candidates would be expected to be able to create models of missile seeker or develop autopilots and perform 6-DOF analysis with minimal supervision. Additional experience in industry or lab environment and developing multiple seeker models and/or autopilots independently desired. Candidates should also be able to grasp the big picture and make decisions about how to proceed with development and testing with minimal oversight. Successful candidates are expected to have experience working in a laboratory environment or at a manufacturer of missiles and have significant MATLAB experience. Candidates with missile or aircraft RF seeker and GNC experience will be given preference.
Communication Skills: Successful candidates should be able to effectively communicate with Leidos aerodynamics, airframe, and guidance and control personnel, and interact daily with customers, team members and end users. Must develop a clear understanding of customer goals and objectives and shape work activities to satisfy them. Must present both verbal and written status on a regular basis, and prepare manuscripts for publication at technical conferences and for professional journals.
Engineering Skills: Recent and relevant experience with one or more of the following disciplines is required:
• Modeling of Seekers – experience in modeling the performance of RF gimbaled seekers, conformal seekers, AESA based seekers, and/or strap down seekers
• Autopilots/Control Systems – the design and development of autopilots for missiles or aircraft
• MATLAB – demonstrated experience in developing MATLAB based control architectures
• SWIL/HWIL testing – prior experience in proving out control software using SWIL or HWIL testing
Education: Early career level requires accredited Engineering Degree and 2 plus years’ experience in industry or a MS in a relevant field.
Clearance: Must be a U.S. Citizen with active Secret clearance.
Desired Skills: Preferred candidates will in addition have recent and relevant skills with the following:
• Experience on a missile design or modeling effort
• 6-DOF simulation environments and the evaluation of missiles and/or aircraft
• Scripting – the use of Python or other scripting languages to perform large numbers of simulations
• Familiarity and the ability to apply metrics such as NEZ, F-Pole, and other air-to-air combat metrics
• Labview – strong skills in developing object oriented code in the Labview environment to control systems and to acquire data
