Leidos is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work remotely from your home office. The qualified candidate must have experience in deploying or configuring Splunk.

The Sr. Software Engineer must have extensive experience and knowledge to design, code, test, debug and document software in a variety of programming languages.  The qualified candidate will have the knowledge of the latest programming languages and techniques.  Lastly, extensive experience in creating strategies for developing IT systems and applications. Has experience in evaluating alternative approaches and selecting optimal approaches.

This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the IOSS mission.  The mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Office of Information & Technology (OI&T), Information Technology (IT) Operations and Services (ITOPS), Infrastructure Operations (IO) is to support One VA world-class service to Veterans and their families by delivering results-oriented, secure, highly available, and cost-effective information technology services. IO support helps to provide critical services focusing on consistent availability of Veteran-facing applications and quick delivery of benefits for Veterans

Primary Responsibilities

This position is responsible for working as part of an agile team to quickly asses existing systems and application attributes and to help develop scripts and other tools to ensure we can accurately and efficiently determine the system or application health by keying in on critical business transactions, represent key performance metrics related to system infrastructure, operations and end-user experience to report on the overall health of the system/application attributes and components. This can include LAN and WAN utilization, system/application availability, round trip latency or response times for accessing the business system or performing any of the critical business transactions.   The VA is currently modernizing their Electronic Health Records (ERH) system and dependent systems. Additionally, the VA manages one of the world’s largest Telehealth Systems that emerged as a critical system during the COVID-19 pandemic. The VA is now working towards expanding its Enterprise Command Center to quickly assess readiness across it’s facilities across the nation to respond to and accept COVID-19 cases or redirect them to facilities with the capacity and resources to provide the best possible outcomes for our Veteran population.  It is important that we monitor, report on system and application performance to provide the necessary insights to assess any system vulnerabilities and or unanticipated actions as we bring up new systems and retire legacy systems during key cut overs.

To do this we must have consistent tools, techniques, process and policies in place to assess the current state, predict the future state and provide end-to-end event monitoring, reporting and analysis. Integration with the VA Service Now trouble ticketing system is critical to making sure that event triggers and system alerts are quickly identified, corrected and prevented from future occurrences.

The Senior Systems Engineer will:

  • Provide technical support in system architecture, system design, system integration and technical management.
  • Assist in providing technical input to the systems engineering process.
  • Lead teams in developing application and technical plans. Guide customers in the installation and use of strategic products through education and guidance, first-use and tuning assistance problem solving and critical situation resolution.
  • Design and develop Single Pane of Glass (SPoG) visualizations of the communications infrastructure and critical business systems, application and their associated critical business transactions will provide a consistent view into the overall health of the infrastructure, systems and application that allow the VA to deliver health and financial benefit to our Veteran population.
  • The qualified candidate will have ability to quickly assess and understand critical business systems and associated business transactions to report and manage representing the overall application and/or system health.

Required Skills:

  • Must have experience with deploying or configuring Splunk instances.
  • Must have experience with Splunk
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with any of the following tools:  AppDynamics, SolarWinds, Intrascope, Dynatrace, Aternity and/or other data analytics, monitoring, end-user experience and system/application monitoring and reporting tools
  • Familiarity with key performance metrics, system baselines, event monitoring and alerting.
  • Must have experience with integration with trouble ticket systems such as Service Now.
  • Must have extensive experience with analysis of requirements against fiscal, schedule, and performance issues. Must have experience with one or more of the following scripting languages: Python, PowerShell, C, JavaScript, JSON, TSQL: Prior work with critical business systems for government agencies delivering health benefits to large populations nationwide.
  • Proficient in scripting two or more of the following:  MicroFocus/Topaz (must). Python, C, JavaScript, JSON, TSQL, PowerShell.
  • Ability to develop dashboards using Splunk ITSI and/or Kibana

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Systems, Business or related scientific /technical discipline, plus 5 years of experience.  8 additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for degree.
  • US Citizen with ability to obtain Public Trust clearance. Federal Government requirement
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with any of the following tools:  AppDynamics, SolarWinds, Intrascope, Dynatrace, Aternity and/or other data analytics, monitoring, end-user experience and system/application monitoring and reporting tools
  • Ability to develop dashboards using Splunk ITSI and/or Kibana
  • Familiarity with key performance metrics, system baselines, event monitoring and alerting, integration with trouble ticket systems such as Service Now.
  • Ability to work in a matrix team environment, actively and effectively managing relationships with customers, build and release managers, technical teams, product development, project managers, and other application managers.
  • Experience leading information technology projects involving innovation and/or modernization.
  • Experience developing and reporting upon metrics relative to operational and financial performance.
  • Excellent organization and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate with leadership, staff and customers

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior work with critical business systems for government agencies delivering health benefits to large populations nationwide. Prior VA experience and recent VA credentialing (e.g. recent on-contract work). Understanding of VA critical business systems for delivering Veteran health and financial benefits. Ability to quickly assess and understand critical business systems and associated business transactions to report and manage representing the overall application and/or system health. Knowledge of and/or experience with any of the following tools:  Splunk, Elastic, AppDynamics, SolarWinds, Intrascope, Dynatrace, Aternity and/or other data analytics, monitoring, end-user experience and system/application monitoring and reporting tools. Familiarity with key performance metrics, system baselines, event monitoring and alerting, integration with trouble ticket systems such as Service Now.
