The Leidos Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosives (CBRNE) Portfolio has a Research Chemist position available. The opportunity for the Research Chemist will provide technical support under the Leidos prime contract for delivering services and development efforts supporting the Combat, Capabilities and Development Command (DEVCOM) Chemical Biological Center. This position is located at Aberdeen Proving Ground – Edgewood Area, Maryland.
The Research Chemist will support Chemical Analysis Physical Properties (CAPP) Branch research in areas of materiel science, surface analysis, surface chemistry and imaging as they apply to chemical and biological defense and organic and inorganic aerosols. Research requires broad and extensive knowledge of material science and instrumentation (particularly electron microscopy, scanned probe microscopy and x-ray and ESCA spectroscopy) to conceive, develop, execute and publicize research that has application to smoke and obscuration, chemical and biological defense, protective coatings, and detection.
As a principal investigator, plans, directs and conducts experimental research toward understanding the nature and characteristics of aerosols and their interactions with electromagnetic radiation, and studies aimed at discovering new principles and phenomena on properties and synthesis of materials and nanostructures. The area of inquiry is extremely complex and guidelines applicable to the work contain extensive gaps requiring that the incumbent develop new frameworks of methodology.
Develops a basis for the experimentation and the methodology approach required to solve the problems presenting unprecedented or novel aspects.
Relies upon broad scientific background in materials science and instrumentation, creative insight and astute judgement to identify and delineate precisely the problem. Researches available relevant literature and forms a testable hypothesis before designing the critical experiments.
Develops theoretical frameworks; plans the details of the experiment, modifying, adapting and in many cases developing unique and novel approaches, techniques and methodology, conducts and/or directs the conduct of experiments; reviews, compiles, consolidates and reduces data, analyzes results, draws conclusions. Prepares technical reports of findings and presents results to academic institutions, industrial and/or government groups, and provides training.
Participates in meetings and conferences within the organization and with other organizations to devise coordinated, cooperative and concerted approaches and analysis of technical problems and reports technical status and progress.
