The Research Software Engineer will contribute to the Mission Planning and Debrief (MP&D) research and development in AFRL’s Warfighter Readiness Training Division. This work digitizes mission planning and mission debriefing content and incorporates AI agents to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of planning and debriefing in training exercise and future operations.
You will work as a Research Software Engineer in a high performing research and development team supporting MP&D for autonomous operations in contested environments. You will research, develop, integrate, and validate intelligent agent behaviors for mission planning ingestion, responses to dynamic threats and contingencies, and mission debriefing capabilities.
A primary objective of the MP&D project is to create innovative new approaches for joint human-machine mission planning and debrief. During pre-mission planning the digital infrastructure and AI agents will help planners and aircrew by proposing and evaluating viable solutions. During post-mission Debriefing, the MP&D system will also assist planners and aircrew by automating analysis of mission performance, and by providing recommendations for possible future mission execution improvement. Specifically, you will help create intelligent agents that use symbolic knowledge representation and reasoning techniques to extract and process content from images and tables, such as air mission plans, range restrictions, and weather maps, to respond to dynamic changes during the mission planning process and to provide feedback during the debriefing process.
In addition, this position involves full stack development to help improve the MP&D system in general. This could include anything from user-interface changes to adding additional features to the project. Having a firm grasp of the entire MP&D system will be critical to developing the machine intelligence features.
The successful candidate will work with government customers, software engineers, subject matter experts, and military personnel.
Note: Initial work will primarily be via telework and remote collaboration tools due to real world COVID factors and restrictions, but planned to move to in-office work as the COVID-related situation updates over time and allows for increased in-person workplace capabilities/operations.
