Leidos is currently seeking a full-time Research Scientist II to support the Deployment Health Research Program at the Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. This position will provide research and analytical expertise for large longitudinal studies examining the effects of military service on the health and well-being of servicemembers. Work includes the planning and implementation of multiple ongoing research projects; designing the study methodology; performing statistical analyses for diverse research projects with complex study designs; working with team members to derive an in-depth understanding of the data findings; drafting proposals and writing peer-reviewed publications; mentoring junior analysts; and exercising independent judgment in the resolution of analytical problems. The successful candidate will work as a member of a team to conduct scientific research projects and leads cross-functional project teams.
Participate in all aspects of the research process including survey design, data collection and management, and data analysis and interpretation.
Provide research and analytic support for study design, implementation, and analyses of deployment health research projects.
Provide knowledge and insight to principal investigator for new study ideas and long-term goals and objectives.
Develop Institutional Review Board protocols and grant proposals including conducting literature reviews and writing of the scientific background, study methodology, and data analyses.
Provide study team with individual and group-level teaching and mentorship, and help review the analyses and writing of other team members for scientific rigor and accuracy.
Develop algorithms and write programs to clean, merge, and update variables/datasets from large epidemiologic studies. Run programs to create final datasets ensuring accuracy.
Perform and interpret statistical analyses using SAS and MPlus, including data manipulations, weighting techniques, logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.
Write reports and scientific manuscripts for peer-reviewed professional journals.
Deliver presentations at various national and international scientific and military conferences.
Participate in exchanging ideas and reviewing research with others in the Department and with other researchers at NHRC.
- A doctorate level degree in Public Health, Psychology, Epidemiology, Biostatistics or a related field.
- Minimum 6 years of relevant, progressively responsible experience.
- Proficient in a statistical software package; SAS Enterprise knowledge preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge and ability to use complex research methods for assessing the risk of disease in humans due to potential risk factors.
- Expertise in survey methodology, study design, and conducting statistical analyses to collect and interpret data.
- Proven ability to develop and write scientific articles, proposals, abstracts, and presentations
During the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are highly encouraged to work remotely, although occasional visits to the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego will be required. In the future, this position will be required to be on-site for a minimum of 8 days a month.
Due to federal contract restrictions, candidate must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance.
