Job Description:

Government Health and Safety Solutions Operation is seeking a Jr. UX Software Design Engineer, contingent upon contract award, to support a project at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The position will be located in the Bethesda, Maryland vicinity, but telework may be an option.


The successful candidate will work in an agile and fast-paced environment supporting the HRSA mission to solve unique and challenging problems. The opportunity will provide career growth and skill enhancement to support our design process throughout the planning and development lifecycle for a multitude of unique user interfaces. You will work collaboratively with software engineers, domain experts, customers, and vendors to meet objectives and provide innovative solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support creative solutions for a wide variety of user experience challenges including, but not limited to mobile and desktop web applications.
  • Support the design of useful, usable, and desirable systems, products and services. This includes working closely with software engineers to realize the design.
  • Participate in user research activities enabling the team to build a deep and rich understanding of how our vendors and customers use our platform.
  • Use data, analytics and business requirements to assist product management in developing user stories and requirements.
  • Propose art direction and/or assist to define the visual language.
  • Develop and maintain user-interface specifications.
  • Present design work to the engineering team, product team, and executives for review and feedback.

REQUIRED EDUCATION:
BS degree and 2 – 4 years of prior relevant experience or Masters with less than 2 years of prior relevant experience or equivalent based on evaluation of academic credentials, training and/or experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Bachelor's degree in graphics art or design, human-computer interaction (HCI) or related and less than 2 years of related experience
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance, existing active HHS/NIH public trust clearance is a plus
  • Strong HTML and CSS skills
  • A portfolio or samples of work demonstrating experience creating user-centered design solutions.
  • Some experience designing for a variety of form factors including mobile and desktop.
  • Familiarity in best practices for web-based information architecture and design, as well as knowledge of usability principles and techniques.
  • Visual design abilities demonstrated through mockups.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and storytelling skills.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative multi-disciplinary team and directly with developers for implementation of designs.
  • Understanding of a highly agile software environment.
  • Ability to create illustrations and visual images to communicate complex systems.
  • Demonstrated history of acquiring user data (e.g., conducting usability studies, user interviews, contextual inquiry) is a strong plus.
  • Desire to work in a start-up style environment, where iteration is encouraged.


Requires US citizen or US Person (Green Card Holder) with 3 years consecutive residency in the US with the ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance.
