Leidos is looking for mid-career level engineers with a Mechanical/Structures/Materials background to execute applied research and development programs in the King of Prussia, PA office. This is a technical engineering position to: integrate, develop and maintain physics-based digital system performance models; perform numerical analysis; and support the design of advanced hypersonic weapons systems.

The Aerophysics branch operates in a small team environment where individual creativity is rewarded and continuous learning is the norm. Our engineers typically work directly with DOD personnel and regularly interact with contracting teams from Raytheon, Northrup Grumman, etc. Collaborate with members of a high performance technical team and customer stakeholders to determine study requirements and relevant technical approaches.
Apply knowledge of materials, material science, and the ability to analyze structural performance to support the development of advanced high speed weapons systems. Develop and apply multi-fidelity computational fluid dynamics, structural dynamics, heat transfer and EO/IR propagation tools for the analysis of high speed weapons systems to solve challenging problems associated with these weapons. Perform system trade studies and mission analysis on advanced weapons systems. Analyze data from field and flight tests to validate models and simulations. Develop and perform analysis on improved thermal protection systems, including ablation, erosion, and oxidation modeling, and improve the state of the art modeling materials at elevated temperatures and pressures.
Required Experience and Skills
Experience Level: Successful candidates will be able to perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA), and develop finite element models, etc. with minimal supervision. These candidates will also be able to grasp the big picture and make decisions about how to proceed with analysis with minimal supervision.
Communication Skills: Must develop a clear understanding of customer goals and objectives and shape work activities to satisfy them. Successful candidates should be able to effectively communicate with Leidos, customers, team members and end users on technical, schedule, and cost performance, in both verbal and written methods.
Engineering Skills: Demonstrated recent experience with 3 of 4 of the following disciplines is required:
Finite Element Analysis (ANSYS, NASTRAN, Sierra Tool Suite)
Operating on supercomputing clusters
Prior experience in system analysis and trade space analysis on DOD systems (missiles or aircraft preferred)
Modal or vibration analysis
Education: MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or similar Engineering Degree with 4+ years’ experience in industry.
Clearance: Must be a U.S. Citizen with active Secret clearance.
Desired Skills:
Sierra Tool suite
Solidworks or similar CAD experience
Capstone, TrueGrid, or similar meshing tool
Python Scripting, Object Oriented Programming
Ability to build surrogate or fast running models of physical systems
Experience utilizing shell elements and/or super nodes
Experience with MATLAB
