Leidos's Military & Bio-behavioral Research Health Group is currently seeking a full time Veterinarian Technician III to support biomedical research at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX.  NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

The ideal candidate:

  • Conduct and support surgical procedure, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, insuring specific pathogen free techniques.
  • Daily handling and restraint of various small and large animal species.
  • Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, quality assurance procedures and record keeping.
  • Conduct daily and weekly inspections or areas of contractor responsibility to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Assist in preparation of purchase requests for animal procurement and coordination of shipping procedures.
  • Assist in preparation of purchase requests and assist with maintenance of inventory of supplies. All ordering is conducted by a Government employee.
  • Coordinate animal research work activities between contractor Research Scientist, animal care staff, and research laboratory technicians.
  • Oversee the work of junior level contract personnel.
  • Set up, operate, modify and maintain laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Provide additional functionality incidental to research activities.

Basic Qualifications

  • Associates Degree and at least 5 years of relevant experience; additional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree
  • Certification, Registration or license as Veterinarian Technician (i.e., ALAT, LAT, LATG, etc.)
  • Experience handling rodents, swine, and non-human primates
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a military research environment is highly desired
  • Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS); American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Course; American Red Cross CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation); or equivalent.
