This is an advanced opportunity to use your systems engineering knowledge and skills to support the U.S. Veterans Affairs Enterprise Program Management Division (EPMD) initiatives of the Veteran's Administration (VA) Office of Information Technology (OIT) and IOSS initiatives.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

A Senior Systems Engineer provides technical support in system architecture, system design, system integration, and technical management. This position assists in providing technical input to the systems engineering process, leads teams in developing application and technical plans, and guides customers in the installation and use of strategic products through education and guidance, first-use and tuning assistance, problem solving, and critical situation resolution.

Primary Responsibilities:

The primary focus of the Senior Systems Engineer will be on Dev/Ops. This position will provide support for hosted enterprise applications within multiple programs supporting the VA, while improving and expanding the VA’s development systems and environments to use continuous integration and deployment, resulting in improved product quality and increased productivity.

The ideal candidate should be prepared to communicate the utilization of development tools to sustain and improve systems.  Additionally, the candidate must have extensive experience in test-driven development and possess a strong development background. The candidate will be a DevOps Engineer skilled in scripting, configuration management, and infrastructure automation. In this role, the candidate will work collaboratively with cross-organizational VA teams to deploy and automate infrastructure and application systems. Additionally, candidates will automate and streamline processes, build and maintain operational tools, and troubleshoot and resolve issues in development, test, and production environments.

Other responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring the reliability, flexibility, and cost-effectiveness of our operations and development infrastructures, while working with other engineering leads to improve, grow, and expand existing systems

  • Maintaining existing systems and identifying any opportunities for improvements which may also include automation, monitoring, logging, and profiling projects

  • Assisting teams in the evaluation of existing applications and mapping to the most appropriate models, determining the appropriate scenarios for effective use of development tools, and collaboratively working with other technical teams to provide guidance and ensure systems and solutions are scalable and reliable

  • Develop applications in support of application readiness, onboarding and application transformation

  • Building infrastructure automation using scripts, runbooks, and orchestration

  • Providing subject-matter expertise in the evaluation of system requirements, architectures, models, designs, and release/deployment plans

  • Evaluating current systems for various components to include requirements, architecture, design, modeling, planning, and release and deployment artifacts

  • Participating in the development of action plans to remedy findings from assessments, and when required, provide solutions to system teams.

  • Working closely with architects to sync VA enterprise initiatives and communicate needs of the agency for new strategies, ensuring compliance with applicable cyber requirements and other government policies and directives, and utilizing engineering and integration of tools and software for use in operating environments

  • Resolving problems reported or discovered; include root cause analysis and reporting

  • Designing and documenting the automation and associated designs by analyzing requirements, constructing workflow charts and diagrams, studying system capabilities, and writing specifications

  • Providing enhancements or improvements to systems by studying current workflows and designs and determining inefficiencies

  • Preparing technical reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends

  • Supporting configuration management, quality assurance, and cyber security throughout the release cycle in an Agile environment

  • Assisting the IT Service Desk when needed to troubleshoot and quickly resolve issues for end users, collaborating with others in influencing the modernization strategy, and publishing and presenting architectural changes to peers and technology leaders
