The Leidos Corporation is seeking a Project Safety Engineer (PSE) who will support U.S. research sites in Antarctica and safe implementation of projects from Large Projects Office (LPO). The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Safety and Health team working on the United States Antarctic Program's (USAP). The PSE will be helping project management teams integrate safety & health, risk management considerations and provide safety oversight of projects throughout the program.
Our projects range from civil work, utilities, marine-based projects, new facilities, renovations, repairs, and field science construction. LPO support will be a mix of self-performed and subcontracted work. This position is based in Centennial, CO and requires periodic and perhaps multiple deployments to Antarctica in a single year. It is anticipated that the PSE will deploy each season, typically during the Antarctic austral summer. Deployments may sometime be required during August to October and/or February to June. Total deployment time will be scaled to the needs of the LPO and sustaining safety needs, typically a minimum of 2 months and no greater than 4 to 6 months.
While in Centennial, the PSE will collaborate in the development and review of LPO projects and plans. This includes the development of new, and review of existing, resource loaded schedules development of material takeoffs for self-performed work. The PSE will reside in the Mission Assurance Directorate and will be funded (50/50) by LPO and sustaining safety budgets. The PSE will be integrated in the LPO to implement processes and procedures of the sustaining ASC Safety Team. Further, the PSE will engage regularly with engineering, planning and controls, and project managers to ensure that designs are inclusive of relevant safety and health regulatory requirements and industry standards. The PSE will work in conjunction with construction managers and project managers to ensure project safety plans are developed to capture OSHA and other applicable safety standard requirements.
The PSE will also work with Engineering and other Stakeholders on constructability reviews and in developing innovative and risk-integrated approaches to building design construction for Antarctica. While in Antarctica, the PSE will work with construction superintendents, trade supervisors, and work crews to ensure safety and health requirements are understood and followed during project execution.
Interacts with National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials in a professional and tactful manner, on an as needed basis. Communicates professionally, both orally and in writing, with subordinates as needed to relay information they need in order to be successful in their jobs. This includes, but is not limited to, providing various training courses, attending staff meetings, performance appraisals, job requirements, projects, Quality Standard Procedures, and safety practices.
Responsible for implementing and maintaining a safe workplace program and ensuring that safety is the highest priority on the job site. Complies with applicable safety, environmental, health, and waste management policies and procedure. Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Safety, Engineering or related field. A post graduate degree with an unrelated Bachelor's degree may be considered. Additional years of experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Minimum of five years’ experience with safety and health rules, regulations, standards, and risk management practices specific to construction industry. Working knowledge of basic industrial hygiene principles is required.
- Master Degree in Safety or Environmental Science, Construction, or Environmental Engineering
- CSP, CIH, CHMM, and/or CHST professional credentials
PHYSICAL AND / OR OTHER SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Deployment to Antarctica may be required in this position (typically 2 months and no greater than 4-6 months annually). This position requires successful completion of the National Science Foundation (NSF) physical, dental, and psychological examinations for deploying to Antarctica. Failure to meet these requirements may result in withdrawal of employment offer or other employment action. US citizenship or permanent residency is required.
