The Leidos Research Support Team supporting the National Energy Technology Laboratory is seeking a Geological Data Scientist to join our Team in Albany, OR as part of our Workforce Development Program. This opportunity will allow side by side execution of research with world-class scientists and engineers using state of the art equipment to contribute to new areas of basic and applied research.
TERM OF COMMITMENT: This research position is intended to be a term position, with varying levels of commitment that are not expected to last longer than 1 year. The employee will participate in studies relating to large oil-well data sets, data collection and organization with machine learning and database management emphasis. These studies will have larger applications that provide understanding to the ocean subsurface, enhance access to critical data, and advance carbon storage. This work will involve a multidisciplinary team participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists and computer scientists to support the priorities of the DOE Fossil Energy and Carbon Management mission space.
Location: Albany, OR
•Use Machine Learning methods and or neural learning pathways to augment geospatial analysis and algorithm development
•Support geostatistical modeling and model development.
•Designing supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms that incorporate data from scientific research related to energy.
•Extracting attributes from datasets for integration into different systems, aggregating data resources into ArcGIS database
•Extracting relevant information from data results and integrating into Natcarb database, which will include reading through reports, presentations, USGS online core repository, well logs, and geospatial data files to collect missing data for specific formations in the USA
•Completing calculations using published equations for volumetric storage capacity
•Collaborating with geologists and other science researchers to assist each other in accomplishing project-related tasks.
•Building relationships with internal and external clients.
•Creating and delivers oral and poster presentations of results.
•Master’s degree in applied petroleum engineering, computer science, math, spatial statistics, geography, geo-statistics, geospatial science or similar field with less than 2 years of prior relevant experience
•Familiarity with ArcGIS, geologic terminology, and familiarity with different types of rock properties, ArcGIS (ArcMap or ArcPRO)
•Demonstrable skills in the application of various machine learning algorithms, as well as skills working with probability distributions and multi-variate analysis
•Understanding and experience in spatial and/or subsurface topics
•Background in geospatial statistics and applications to energy and environmental systems
•Robust coding experience including Python
•Experience using ArcGIS Server and database software management systems like Microsoft Access, SQL Server, or PostGRES
•Experience in spatial mapping and analysis
•Familiarity with geologic systems and geohazards is strongly preferred
•Evidence of substantive participation in the geospatial scientific community.
