Job Description:

The Defense Health Operation of Leidos is currently looking for a Research Scientist to support biomedical research at the Naval Medical Research Unit, San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio, TX.  NAMRU-SA conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.

Primary Responsibilities

The ideal candidate shall:

  • Develop and test laser-activated nanomaterials for photothermal biofilm destruction using in vitro and in vivo models

  • Design, synthesize, and characterize biocompatible nanomaterials and develop strategies for targeted delivery of these materials to the site of action

  • Evaluate antimicrobial efficacy and biocompatibility of functionalized nanomaterials using in vitro and in vivo models

  • Assist in development of appropriate in vitro and in vivo infection models to evaluate the effects of antimicrobial therapies

  • Utilize advanced imaging techniques to study the effects of experimental treatments

  • Formulate research hypotheses, design experiments, and collect, analyze, and interpret data

  • Prepare and present findings internally and externally through briefings, seminars, conferences, and publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • Prepare research proposals, IACUC protocols, SOPs, technical reports, presentation materials, manuscripts for peer review, and patent applications

  • Supervise and train junior research personnel in conducting laboratory experiments, establishing in vivo models according to approved animal use protocols, collection and analysis of data sets, and preparing proposals, reports, animal use protocols, laboratory SOPs, peer-review manuscripts, and presentations

Required Qualifications

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must possess Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, biophysics, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, or other related field

  • At least 5-7 years of related research experience

  • Excellent communication and analytical skills

  • Ability to supervise others and serve as a research team leader. Ability to assume responsibility for and have knowledge of all phases of the research process, including problem definition, planning, budget formulation, execution, and analysis, interpretation, and reporting of findings

  • Experience presenting and writing peer-reviewed scientific articles. Knowledge of preparation and presentation of scientific articles including formatting, writing, and graphic presentations

  • Experience with and/or ability to quickly learn operation of various laboratory instruments and data acquisition modalities

  • Ability to make and record detailed observations and independently troubleshoot technical procedures

  • Ability to perform basic statistics and mathematical calculations, to including but not limited to power analysis and ANOVA

  • Experience in using MSWord, MSPowerPoint, MSExcel spreadsheets, and graphing software such as GraphPad Prism

  • Must be able to work a flexible work schedule which may occasionally include evening or weekend shifts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of interaction of lasers with nanomaterials and laser-induced photothermal and optoacoustic effects

  • Knowledge of laser-tissue interactions

  • Experience with pulsed laser operation such as alignment with optics, dosimetry, beam profiling, beam shaping, and laser safety procedures

  • Knowledge of nanoparticle design, coating, conjugation, and characterization techniques such as FTIR, DLS/ELS, and UV-Vis/fluorescent spectrophotometry

  • Experience with microbial and mammalian cell analysis and imaging methods including confocal microscopy and real-time RT-PCR

  • Experience with in vitro and in vivo infection models

  • Experience with handling animals and performing basic surgical procedures
