Senior Mechanical Engineer
The Leidos Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) team is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer as a project developer to join our engineering team located in Walled Lake, MI (or remote employee).
This is a great opportunity for an experienced engineer who likes to lead teams, while working directly with potential clients. The successful candidate will review existing customer facility infrastructure operations and develop new, innovative approaches that will result in project approaches that will save our clients’ money through energy savings, capital avoidance, and reduced labor costs.
Working with a diverse and collaborative project development team, this position will be responsible for the mechanical design and overall design in support of the project development and controls strategies, including the investigations of better technical solutions, preliminary assessments, detailed concept reports, equipment specifications, component selections, critical component design, and communicating concepts to the installation team.
The ultimate goal for this position will be to develop financially viable infrastructure projects that will leverage the capabilities of the Leidos team and their preferred subcontractors and material suppliers. The position will also leverage industry leading technologies and Leidos patented processes to increase overall value to the projects.
The successful candidate will need be self-motivated and have the ability to work on large project tasks, both independently and with other technical staff. You will also need to be able to demonstrate exceptional interpersonal and analytical skills, together with good communication skills with both the client and team members. Travel will be required during project development and project commissioning (20-40%).
Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Leading a cross-functional team to perform the following tasks.
Investigating current customer facility operations to access current energy and operating expenditures as well as life expectancy of current equipment.
Developing strategies to improve customer facility operation systems that result in a proposed project that creates positive cash flow for the client.
Develop preliminary audit reports (PA) that will provide high level scope and estimated costs to aide business development team in obtaining a viable project to further develop and execute.
Work with business development team to present the PA to the customer’s team.
Further develop the PA into an investment grade audit (IGA) which will include a 30% design, specified equipment and materials, a firm-fixed pricing model, savings for individual energy conservation measures, and aiding in energy rebate submissions.
Support the transition and kick-off of the project to the project execution team. This will include finalizing designs, ensuring equipment is ordered per specifications, and
answering design questions the team may have.
Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field with 8 + years’ experience, OR a Master’s degree in related field and 6 years’ experience - additional experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
4+ years designing HVAC systems and/or specifying mechanical equipment for HVAC applications.
Strong knowledge of manufacturing HVAC infrastructure equipment including chillers, air houses, exhaust fans, boilers, pumping skids, etc.
Strong communication skills, including excellent writing and presentation skills
Ability to lead other team members
Good documentation and process discipline with close attention to details
Mechanical Professional Engineer (PE) is preferred, but not required
Familiarity with HVAC equipment within automotive facilities
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) is a plus
