The Leidos Innovations Center (LInC) has an opening for a Senior Scientist/Research Leader in our Arlington, VA office. The ideal candidate will have significant responsibilities as a Senior Scientist and Research Leader for scientific and engineering endeavors. The Senior Scientist/Research Leader is responsible for researching, developing theories, and devising methods for the purpose of contributing to a range of multi-phase sensor development programs within LInC/Dynetics and across Leidos. Mentoring of technical teams is expected. This is an exciting opportunity to use your scientific knowledge of geophysical principles in the analysis and processing of geophysical signatures generated from various sources including earthquakes, explosions and other natural and artificial sources. Projects include analysis and signal processing of collected data and algorithmic development support for implementations on embedded systems. Duties include planning and executing research, maintaining substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, systematic curation, interpretation and evaluation of data in a planned manner and contributing to development of program capture.
The Senior Scientist/Research Leader is responsible for analysis and algorithmic development of complex systems. This individual serves as a Principal Investigator on several current sensor integration programs involving measurement of seismic, acoustic and/or magnetic signatures.
Responsibilities and routine daily activities includes:
Data analysis and algorithmic development
Collecting, processing and interpreting reference data collects
Developing and applying algorithms from published sources and/or developing new algorithms to meet specific mission requirements
Working with hardware and software engineers to migrate algorithms onto low-SWaP embedded systems platforms
Analyzing and interpreting modeling and simulation outputs, including quantitative assessments, e.g. by comparison with collected data
Using geophysical source excitation and geophysical propagation models in the inversion of signature data to determine source characteristics
Support Leidos capture processes
Write white-papers describing key Leidos technical capabilities in geophysical data analysis and signal processing, including responding to RFIs
Support proposal efforts – by leading technical proposal development, technical writing, and/or participating as a technical reviewer
Successful candidate will support multiple sensor programs with different modalities and requirements, so “parallel processing” is a must.
The Research Leader will mentor other technical staff on the program, helping to grow the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Coordinating with the Program Manager, technical teammates (both Leidos and subcontractors) and US Government customer(s) as a subject matter expert in physical phenomenology and geological properties that can influence success of sensor deployment and obtaining data.
** Telecommuting options can be considered for this position.**
Advanced degree (PhD) in a physical science or engineering discipline with 10 or more years of experience involving advanced seismic, acoustic and magnetic data analysis and signal processing.
Recognized subject matter expert in at least one relevant geophysical domain (seismic, acoustic or magnetic)
Position requires verbal and written communication proficiency. Proven track-record in capturing R&D contract work through technical proposal submissions is required.
Experience in field collections of seismic, acoustic and/or magnetic data
Active Secret clearance minimum, ability to qualify for Top Secret clearance
Must have a working knowledge and experience programming in MATLAB, Python and/or other high-level programming languages.
Experience with sensor development, integration, data exploitation and/or signal processing methods.
Experience with applications of seismic/acoustic/magnetic data for WMD analysis, weapons effects
System engineering experience spanning mechanical, electrical, thermal, computing and communications elements desirable.
