We are in search of a Director of Systems Engineering to join our team. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with electrical and mechanical design, industrial design, RF & X-Ray systems, systems engineering, and software development. They thrive in an intense, dynamic environment, and are happy to engage in a hands-on leadership role, applying a highly analytical mindset and strong problem-solving skills to their work. The Director of Systems engineering will also oversee adherence to quality documentation requirements within the systems design team. The Director of System Engineering is a key member of the team and will have a large impact on the company’s products and success.

The position is responsible for the system aspects of the design, development, validation/verification and integration of the aviation security product line. This position can telework up to 50% of the time.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build, lead, and scale a Systems Engineering team to provide cross-functional technical leadership from product concept to production.
  • Organizational experience partnering with global leaders, HR and recruiting to develop and execute on a strategy to attract, retain and develop top talent and role model leadership best practices. Recruit and develop great people; continually raising the bar.
  • Leadership skills in inspiring, driving, and executing results through direct and cross-functional teams.
  • Coordinate and manage driving requirements for feature development and validation processes with cross-functional teams.
  • Drive alignment across cross-functional teams in hardware engineering, product management, systems, software, program management and operations to meet program objectives and ensure user experience, product cost, manufacturability, quality and go-to-market strategies are met.
  • Drive the development of test plans ensuring complete coverage and traceability of feature/system requirements.
  • Planning the test activities and increasing efficiency and effectiveness across major subsystems .
  • Set priorities within the department and align those priorities with the company’s broader vision/mission.
  • Develop budget proposals for staffing and ensure the efficient and effective operation of the systems engineering team within cost requirements. 
  • Interfacing with other engineering managers, product management, and program management to drive new product development programs from concept to production.
  • Scope, manage, and deliver multiple technical projects in parallel from concept to production.
  • Balance short-term priorities with long-term vision.
  • Evaluating and identifying improvements to the overall design processes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent technical discipline.  Master’s Degree+ preferable.
  • A minimum of 8 years’ experience in Systems Engineering disciplines and the government program acquisition lifecycle, to include requirements definition, creation of requirements verification test matrices, requirements decomposition, requirements traceability, design reviews and documentation, and integration and test.
  • Track record and demonstrated leadership experience in developing and launching complex products / capital equipment to market.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience leading and collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team environment.
  • Interpret customer needs on individual programs to drive the design through systems engineering processes including developing concepts of employment, use cases, functional block diagrams, sequence diagrams, supporting hardware/software requirements definition, decomposition, allocation, and specifying interfaces
  • Interact with functional leads of all design disciplines to generate specifications and owner of the final specification and delivery of the engineering design package to meet this specification.
  • Prior experience managing Systems Engineering, Test and Validation
  • Deliver improvements in engineering quality through application of best practices in Systems Engineering: System Architecture/Design, I&T, and Reliability.
  • Evaluate overall systems project risks and facilitate risk mitigation planning and execution with program and functional leadership.
  • Drive out of the box thinking to meet difficult engineering schedule milestone goals.
  • Introduce and drive new technologies and tools such as MBSE and Digital Engineering.
  • Ensure standardization of products and processes across multiple projects; Drive engineering process improvements.
  • Ensure that component/subsystem designs properly integrate and meet system requirements; identify and document interfaces.
  • Familiarity with dFMEA, pFMEA, and reliability analysis.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Systems Engineering disciplines.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required for effective interface with all internal and external contacts.  Position requires strong presentation skills in front of high-level government officials and internal Senior Management.
  • May require occasional travel (5%), domestic or international.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US secret security clearance, which requires US Citizenship. We are unable to sponsor visas for this position and require applicants to be either a US citizen or a permanent resident (Green Card holder).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the Electronic Warfare, Radar, or aerospace domains
  • Experience with requirements management tools, such as Jama/ DOORS
  • Experience with Model Based System Engineering tools
  • Experience with Issue Tracking tools such as JIRA
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence
  • Experience with design to cost.
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with other organizational leaders that drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional track record in technical team management, developing organizational capability and recruiting/growing key talents.
  • Thorough understanding of modeling and simulation, particularly hardware-in-the-loop simulation and system modeling.
  • Working knowledge of low-noise sensors, radar systems, and x-ray systems a plus. Basic knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum and related technologies.
  • Current US secret security clearance.
