We are in search of a Director of Data Science to join our team. Our ideal candidate is comfortable with electrical and mechanical systems, RF, X-Ray, optical systems, and software development. They thrive in an intense, dynamic environment, and are happy to engage in a hands-on leadership role, applying a highly analytical mindset and strong problem-solving skills to their work. The Director of Data Science will lead teams that are developing innovative solutions, leveraging patterns and relationships in order to enhance aviation security applications. We are looking for sharp, disciplined, and highly quantitative individuals who have a passion for playing with data, in all its forms, including data mining, mathematical modeling, cognitive computing and expert systems. You will leverage your skills and passion for Machine Learning, AI and Cognitive Computing to drive SD&As product strategy.

This leader must coach and grow, retain and recruit top diverse talent onto the team and inspire them to deliver the best work of their lives. This leader must possess a strong product development understanding and background and guide team in best options to embed AI/ML models within aviation security products. They are expected to be highly in-tune with industry best practices, technologies, processes, and techniques and can provide leadership to multiple teams on how best to apply them pragmatically to solve technical challenges.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Recruit, train and lead teams of data scientists, engineers and software developers to develop new machine learning and cognitive computing applications for the aviation security market.
  • Organizational experience partnering with global leaders, HR and recruiting to develop and execute on a strategy to attract, retain and develop top talent and role model leadership best practices. Recruit and develop great people; continually raising the bar.
  • Lead the development of AI/ML technology strategies in collaboration with customers, product managers and technical staff to promote continuous innovation in SD&A.
  • Investigate new and developing technologies as they appear in industry and academia and determine how to leverage these new technologies into our applications
  • Set priorities within the department and align those priorities with the company’s broader vision/mission.
  • Develop budget proposals for staffing and ensure the efficient and effective operation of the systems engineering team within cost requirements. 
  • Interfacing with other engineering managers, product management, and program management to drive new product development programs from concept to production.
  • Scope, manage, and deliver multiple technical projects in parallel from concept to deployment.
  • Balance short-term priorities with long-term vision.
  • Evaluating and identifying improvements to the overall design processes.
  • Provide thought leadership and represent SD&A at industry and academic meetings and conferences.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, math, or related major. Master’s Degree+ preferred. 8+ years of experience in data science and software development/programming.
  • Track record and demonstrated leadership experience in developing and launching complex products / capital equipment to market.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience leading and collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team environment.
  • Drive out of the box thinking to meet difficult engineering schedule milestone goals.
  • Introduce and drive new technologies and tools such as MBSE and Digital Engineering.
  • Own the full lifecycle of AI/ML development from ideation and data exploration, algorithm design and testing, algorithm development and deployment, to algorithm monitoring and measuring the overall value.
  • Be a role model and professional coach for data scientists. Help them realize their potential by setting clear expectations, openly evaluating performance, upholding accountability, and challenging them to stretch their skills.
  • Constantly learn, have a clear pulse on innovation across the smart products, security, data science, and analytics communities.
  • Solid foundation in machine learning algorithms and applied statistics (neural networks, linear & logical regressions, decision trees, distributions, classification techniques, etc.) including practical implementations
  • Working knowledge of hardware acceleration techniques for increasing algorithm efficiency for real-time applications
  • Experience building and scaling Machine Learning Infrastructure from embedded applications to networked solutions
  • As a player-coach, lead and execute complex modeling/machine learning projects and new product development from concept to delivery
  • Experience in data visualization and presentation methods
  • Experience managing teams of data scientists/engineers
  • Proficiency in Python development and data science toolsets and libraries
  • Experience with machine learning algorithms (regression, deep learning, reinforcement learning, time series analysis, predictive modeling, data mining, cognitive computing, natural language processing)
  • Experience delivering AI/machine learning applications to end-users
  • Ensure standardization of products and processes across multiple projects; Drive engineering process improvements.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required for effective interface with all internal and external contacts.  Position requires strong presentation skills in front of high-level government officials and internal Senior Management.
  • May require occasional travel (5%), domestic or international.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US secret security clearance, which requires US Citizenship. We are unable to sponsor visas for this position and require applicants to be either a US citizen or a permanent resident (Green Card holder).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the Electronic Warfare, Radar, and multispectral imaging domains
  • Experience with Issue Tracking tools such as JIRA
  • Experience with collaboration tools such as Confluence
  • Proven ability to develop and foster relationships with other organizational leaders that drive a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional track record in technical team management, developing organizational capability and recruiting/growing key talents.
  • Thorough understanding of modeling and simulation, particularly hardware-in-the-loop simulation and digital modeling.
  • Working knowledge of low-noise sensors, radar systems, x-ray, and multispectral imaging systems a plus. Basic knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum and related technologies.
  • Current US secret security clearance.
