The Defense Group at Leidos currently has openings for Senior Welders to work in our Chesapeake, VA and San Diego, CA offices. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience helping the PEO IWS 5 Waterfront Support mission. In this mission, we provide an Alteration Installation Team in support of AN/SQQ-89(V) system installations. You will serve as the lead of a method mount welding team that is being stood up to support our ongoing effort on the waterfront.  You will perform welding operations and conduct non-destructive testing.

Responsibilities – Work you’ll do:

  • Act as lead for method mount weld team; Responsible for implementing and maintaining the welding and brazing program IAW NAVSEA and ABS requirements.

    • Contribute to QA processes, forms, and documentation supporting the welding program.

    • Develop welding Test and Inspection Plans IAW the 9090-310 AIT Quality Assurance Workbook Requirements.

  • Can review, revise, update write and develop welding procedures at a minimum SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, Brazing and know the welding procedure approval process.

  • Understand and correctly interpret welding documents regarding standard process requirements IAW NSTP T9074-AD-GIB-010/1688 Requirements for Fabrication, Welding and Inspection of Submarine Structure, MIL-STD-1689 Fabrication, Welding and Inspection of Ships Structure (c) NSTP S9074-AR-GIB-010/278 Requirements for Fabrication Welding and Inspection and Casting Inspection and Repair for Machinery, Piping and Pressure Vessels, NAVSEA T9074-AS-GIB-010/271 Requirements for Nondestructive Testing Methods, MIL-STD-2035 Nondestructive Testing Acceptance Criteria and NAVSEA S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 Requirements for Welding and Brazing Procedure and Performance Qualification and MIL-STD-22 Welded Joint Design.

  • Understand the welding requirements IAW the applicable NAVSEA Standard Items.

Required Experience, Skills, and Education:

  • Requires High school diploma, GED or industrial school certificate

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience

  • Applicants must have experience with the following processes: SMAW-SS, CS/ FCAW-CS/ GTAW P-14 Socket, ship fitting and OXY ACC GAS Cutting Touch.

  • Ability to weld horizontal, overhead and vertically required.

  • Must possess basic welder’s hand specialty tools, and be ability to work in close spaces and work at heights.

  • Candidate must be able to walk, stand for long periods of time, sit, bend, stretch, reach, squat and twist

  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs

  • Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces

  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels

  • Willingness to travel, strong communication skills and the ability to work in teams is a must

Preferred Experience, Skills, and Education – Favorable if you have:

  • Completed a NDT Level II Visual Inspector Course as outlined in ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and T9074-AS-GIB-010/271.

  • Completed the required practical experience and is certified as a NDT Level II Visual Test Inspector.

  • Qualified and certified visual (VT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (PT), and ultrasonics with shearwave (UT) in accordance with ASNT-TC-1A and NSTP T9074-AS-GIB-010/271.

  • Perform weld workmanship inspections for correct weld joint design, weld joint preparation, joint fit-up, flame and arc cut surfaces.

  • Manage and supervise welders to maintain proficiency/qualifications in the welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, Brazing).

  • Manage, document and control quality assurance paperwork on all welds performed, perform pre-inspections and final welding and NDT inspections (VT, PT, MT, UT).

  • Communicating with internal and external interested parties as applicable regarding welding quality issues and what is required to correct the issues. 

Clearance Required:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance.
