The Leidos Military and Veterans Health Solutions group currently has an opening for Research Scientist to work within the Physical and Cognitive Operational Research Environment Team within the Warfighter Performance Department at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. This is an exciting opportunity to use your experience to improve the health, wellness, and performance of servicemembers and dependents.
The primary responsibility of the Research Scientist is to help conduct studies and analyses with a focus on military operational performance and rehabilitation. Specifically, the Kinesiology Research Assistant will work closely with other researchers, under general supervision, to conduct research studies with the focus of kinesiology, biomechanics, and cognitive effects of load carriage, musculoskeletal injury, traumatic brain injury, and other diagnoses on operational performance of the warfighter.
The Research Scientist will:
Collaborate with other investigators in conducting human performance field and laboratory research including evaluating healthy and injured warfighters in virtual laboratory environments and in operational settings.
Interact with participants and collect biomechanics, electroencephalogram (EEG), physiological, and psychosocial data from human subjects, abiding by human research protection regulations.
Operate and maintain biomechanical laboratory equipment such as the Computer Assisted Rehabilitation Environment (CAREN) system, motion capture systems, EEG systems, electromyography (EMG) systems, isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex system), and portable gait analysis equipment.
Demonstrate statistical and database skills and have a background in technical writing in order to prepare research protocols, scientific presentations, and publications.
Collect, process, analyze, and report on motion capture (optical and IMU), EEG, EMG, biomechanics, and other forms of data.
Use methodologies and procedures to determine levels of physical and cognitive performance, fatigue, fitness, and biomechanics for evaluating military operational performance.
Coordinate research activities including contacting and recruiting human subjects, setting up and running project meetings, writing and submitting project reports.
Modify and review ongoing protocols and submit reports to the local Institutional Review Board.
Write support agreements for research projects and collaborations.
Create standard operating procedures for research protocols and equipment operation for research execution.
Analyze data, and write and submit reports, scientific publications, and presentations.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission.

Bachelor’s degree in biology, physiology, or a related scientific field from an accredited college or university.
Excellent understanding of human performance laboratory equipment such as EEG equipment, biomechanics equipment, IMUs, motion capture, and other laboratory equipment.
Technical writing background with an ability to write research proposals, data sharing agreements, human use protection protocols, technical reports, standard operating procedures, journal articles, and conference papers.
Background in physiological research methodology, design, and statistical analysis in a research setting. Ability to interact positively and professionally within a research-oriented environment.
Excellent critical thinking with problem-solving skills and an ability to work cooperatively in a team setting.
Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities.
Experience using cloud-based database systems for collection, storage, and reporting of research data.
Basic computer skills and experience with software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Teams, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Ability to travel (both locally and overseas).
US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a SECRET government security clearance.
Active SECRET government security clearance
Demonstrated track record conducting research with service members, preferably two or more years of related experience.
